Press Freedom in Malaysia

I am sure many Malaysians are aware that our newspapers are losing favor in this country. The reason is starkly simple. If one reads a Malaysian newspaper, one is sure to be misinformed!

So, on this note, we should thank our lucky stars that Malaysia is No. 145 in the 2013 World Press Freedom Index. With the likes of Utusan Malaysia, New Straits Times and Star, I am actually surprised we weren’t ranked lower! After all, not many countries – well, except for the bottom 34 countries – can boast of having newspapers where there is absolute freedom to report on anything about Malaysia that deliberately distorts the truth!

This is the country’s worst showing in the benchmark since 2002. I daresay that for the country to nosedive 23 places in just one year is a remarkable achievement! [Malaysia had been ranked at 122 and 141 for the years 2011/2012 and 2010, respectively, in the index compiled by Reporters Without Borders].

This is Najib Razak’s so-called successful transformation. Information changes into disinformation. Facts mutates into fiction. Truthfulness metamorphoses into falsehood. Another example of Malaysia Boleh!

We must demand a free press! Otherwise, others might think we are not free!
