A World Record on Instagram

On Thursday, I had mentioned David Attenborough in a blog post – today, I discovered that he has made a new name for himself.

Not only has he joined the cool kids on Instagram, he's broken the record for reaching a million followers in the shortest period – in fact, this feat has landed him the Guinness World Record. He took only four hours and 44 minutes! Since then, his followers have more than quadrupled.

And he only has two Instagram posts so far, both of them videos.

“I’m making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble”, Attenborough said in his first-ever Instagram video. “Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on”.

There’s more on the way from Attenborough, who has a documentary called "A Life on Our Planet" that debuts on Netflix on October 04. In the documentary, he recalls the natural wonders he’s documented over his career, the destruction he’s witnessed at the hands of humans, and what can be done to repair the damage.

“Human beings have overrun the world. This film is my witness statement and my vision for the future”, he says in the documentary trailer.

"Planet Earth", which debuted in 2006 with Attenborough narrating, still holds the Guinness World Record for the most in-demand documentary TV show. And he holds two more Guinness records for the longest career as a TV presenter and the longest career as a TV naturalist.

For those of you who don't know him, David Attenborough has one of the most recognized and beloved voices in the world. The British broadcaster and nature historian has spent most of his 94 years on Earth educating humanity about the wonders of the natural world, inspiring multiple generations to care about the planet we all call home.

Now, you know!

October 01 is International Coffee Day

Yes, I had my coffee today!

British broadcaster and natural historian David Attenborough (left) led a call from conservation groups on Wednesday for the world to invest $500 billion a year to halt the destruction of nature.

“Our natural world is under greater pressure now than at any time in human history, and the future of the entire planet – on which every single one of us depends – is in grave jeopardy”, ninety-four-year-old Attenborough warned. “We still have an opportunity to reverse catastrophic biodiversity loss, but time is running out”.

The call to redirect financing away from fossil fuels and other polluting industries and into locally-led conservation was launched by environmental group Flora & Fauna International and backed by more than 130 organizations.

FYI, the world spends an estimated $80-90 billion on conservation each year – but much more money is needed if we are honestly serious about wanting to save ecosystems from collapse. The danger is very real.
