Rice Dumping Exposes Widespread Food Wastage in Malaysia

The statistics from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation reveal that Malaysians discard approximately 39,078 tonnes of solid waste daily with food constituting the largest portion at 30.6%.

This problem escalates during festive seasons in Malaysia, where cultural celebrations lead to increased food waste due to excessive preparation and consumer buying patterns.

Lately, we saw the disposal of rice, flour and other products by a politician who has taken responsibility for the act after photos and videos of the dumping of the food products went viral on social media. This has led the Consumer Association of Kedah to describe the dumping of rice and other essential items in Temerloh, Pahang as an act of betrayal to the people, in particular the needy.

Their president Yusrizal Yusoff lamented the action as a “really serious wastage” and called for the relevant authorities to carry out thorough probes into the incident.

Following media reports, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu instructed the Temerloh Padi and Rice Supervision Office (KPB) to conduct an investigation.

Following that, the former deputy home minister Ismail Mohamed Said (right) admitted to having disposed of the rice and other food items at the illegal dump site.

Ismail, in a statement, said the items were from a stockpile he had prepared for his constituents when he was the Kuala Krau MP, but that they were no longer fit for public consumption.

“I take full responsibility and deeply regret this matter, and I apologise to all parties for the oversight in monitoring the disposal of kitchen goods that went viral on social media yesterday (April 19)”, he added.

He was reported as saying that the food items were procured using personal funds before the 15th General Election in 2022, but they were not distributed as it was against election regulations.

The 10 BN Backers of Muhyiddin Yassin

At a special UMNO delegates’ briefing yesterday, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (left) had called out the 10 BN MPs who signed statutory declarations on November 20, 2022, a day after the 15th General Election, backing Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin as their prime minister candidate.

It is understood that the session was attended by the political bureaus of each UMNO division.

Supreme Council member Puad Zakarshi listed their names:
  • Hishammuddin Hussein (Sembrong)
  • Hasni Mohammad (Simpang Renggam)
  • Wee Ka Siong (Ayer Hitam)
  • Jalaluddin Alias (Jelebu)
  • M Saravanan (Tapah)
  • Wee Jeck Seng (Tanjung Piai)
  • Isam Isa (Tampin)
  • Adnan Abu Hassan (Kuala Pilah)
  • Arthur Joseph Kurup (Pensiangan)
  • Abdul Rahman Mohamad (Lipis)
The FMT video on YouTube identifies them by name and parliamentary constituency:

Today, UMNO Youth and Puteri UMNO urged that party traitors be immediately sacked before they plague the party further.

Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had used the Malay idioms of "api dalam sekam" and "gunting dalam lipatan" (enemies within) to describe the betrayers.

He stressed that these "cancers'' were destroying the party, only prioritising their individual needs despite being given multiple chances to become election candidates representing UMNO.

I suppose for the good of Barisan Nasional, these traitors should be axed and in the case of the backstabbing MPs from their partners, MCA, MIC and PBRS, it’s best UMNO dissolve BN. After all, four of their parliamentarians – of which, one is a party president and two are deputy presidents – willfully betrayed Zahid who is also the BN head honcho.

I wonder if Zahid has the political will and courage to undertake the necessary cleanup. We shall see.

Anwar Ibrahim is Malaysia’s Next PM

Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim (left) has been named the country’s 10th prime minister, ending a five-day wait for Malaysians following the divisive 15th general election.

He will be sworn in at 5 PM today at Istana Negara.

In a statement, the Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the decision was made after the special meeting of the Conference of Malay Rulers at 11 AM. He said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had consented to the appointment, which was made in accordance with Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.

The appointment was finalised after the King (right) sought the opinions of the Malay Rulers who convened a special meeting at Istana Negara today to make the best decision for the interests and well-being of the country and the people, he said.

It helped that UMNO are willing to form a unity government with Pakatan Harapan. Their secretary-general Ahmad Maslan announced their decision “to uphold the decree by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for Barisan Nasional to support and be part of a unity government, (and we have decided that this would be one) which is not led by PN, to ensure a stable and prosperous government can be formed” (New Straits Times, November 24, 2022 @ 2:06 AM).

Sarawak's GPS and Sabah's Warisan are similarly expected to throw their support behind this unity government.

World’s Largest Book Published in Texas, USA

In the US, a Texas non-profit and the Bryan Museum in Galveston teamed up to break the Guinness World Record for largest published book with a tome measuring 7 feet tall and 11 feet wide and weighing in at 496 pounds.

Literacy nonprofit iWRITE and The Bryan Museum in Galveston teamed up to create a massive version of the book "I Am Texas", which contains writing and artwork from 1,000 Texas students from third to 12th grades.

Thankfully, the book has smaller versions available for purchase.

Yesterday, in Malaysia, Gabungan Parti Sarawak candidate Anyi Ngau has been declared winner of the Baram parliamentary seat, where polling had been delayed because of bad weather. He secured 18,399 votes, defeating his closest rival Roland Engan of Pakatan Harapan by a 7,339 majority in a three-cornered contest.

GPS have now won 23 seats out of 31 contested. The other Sarawak seats were won by DAP (5), and one each by Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional, and Parti Bangsa Malaysia.

Only one parliamentary seat and one state seat remain in contention after the elections for both seats were postponed due to the deaths of election candidates.

These are the Padang Serai parliamentary seat in Kedah and the Tioman state seat in Pahang. The election for both seats will be held on December 07 instead, while nomination day falls on November 24.

Donald Trump's Twitter Account Is Back

Former US President Donald Trump’s Twitter account has been reinstated on the platform.

The account, which Twitter banned following the January 06, 2021, attack on the Capitol, was restored after Twitter CEO and new owner Elon Musk posted a poll on Twitter on Friday asking the platform’s users if Trump should be reinstated.

“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated”, Musk tweeted Saturday. “Vox Populi, Vox Dei”, Latin for “the voice of the people is the voice of God”.

On Saturday, while the poll was still underway, Trump posted a link to it on Truth Social, the Twitter alternative he founded, urging his 4.6 million followers there to vote for him.

But he also wrote: “Don’t worry, we aren’t going anywhere. Truth Social is special!”

More than 15 million votes were cast in Musk’s poll – Twitter has 237 million daily users – the final poll results on Saturday night showed 51.8% in favor and 48.2% opposed.

As of 11:30 AM EST (1630 GMT) Sunday, the revived account of the “45th President of the United States of America,” with its blue “verified” checkmark, had not posted any new messages.

The last message dates from January 08, 2021, when the billionaire said he would not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony.

On the same day, Twitter banned the account, which was being followed by some 88.8 million people, citing the risk of further incitement to violence.

Trump’s followers numbered 86.6 million as yesterday – though it was unclear how many of those were real and how many were bots – while the number of accounts followed by him went from zero to 49.

Trump reveled in using Twitter as a mouthpiece during his presidency, posting policy announcements, attacking political rivals and communicating with supporters.

In Sarawak, Malaysia, twelve polling stations have been opened today for the Baram parliamentary seat voting after polling was suspended on Saturday due to bad weather.

Election Commission secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak said the time for the casting of vote is from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM or 2 PM depending on the respective centres.

A Numbers Game

Both Perikatan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are jostling for support to form the government. It's become a numbers game.

For PN, an alliance with their Sabah counterpart GRS and Sarawak's GPS will produce 101 seats (73+6+22). With the addition of PBM, Warisan, Parti KDM and the 2 Sabah independents, this tally increases to 108 seats (101+1+3+1+2).

This is still not enough to form a government – which need 111 seats under the current Parliament. As party hopping is not an option, PN must then get BN's support in order to make the numbers.

One possible solution is for PN to ally with BN's seven Sabah MPs – who are in government together with GRS. This will give PN 115 seats in Parliament.

[Note: Sabah BN has autonomy from their peninsula counterparts – and backing a PN prime minister would not violate the anti-hopping law. And Umno have not amended their party rules to prevent MPs from going against the party – by making it a "voluntary resignation" offence].

This also opens up PN's opportunities to secure support from BN MPs who are not aligned with UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for support in forming a government.

As for PH, an alliance with GPS, PBM, Warisan, Parti KDM and the Sabah independents would get them just enough seats, i.e. 111 seats (82+22+1+3+1+2) – a simple majority.

[Note: As per NST at 8:19 AM, PBS president Maximus Ongkili under the GRS banner has lost the Kota Marudu parliamentary seat which he tried to defend for the seventh time to Parti KDM's Wetrom Bahanda].

However, they must win at least one of the two seats pending, i.e. Baram in Sarawak and Padang Serai in Kedah – whose elections have been postponed – in order to get a 112-seat simple majority once those vacant seats have been filled up.

After all, Padang Serai is a mixed seat which PH-PKR have held since 2008 – making it a possible winnable seat if PH can ensure a high enough turnout.

All the above are convoluted arrangements that will require a lot of horse-trading.

I reckon PH must be pragmatic and team up with BN – and only then, can we see a way out of this GE15 imbroglio. With PH's 82 and BN's 30, you get 112.

It's a no-brainer, really.

If I may add, PH should send out feelers to both GPS and Warisan. If they agree to join in, it'll boost the numbers in favor of PH.

I've said my piece. As of now, the process to form a government is very much up in the air. We can only wait and see.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 10

Malaysia faces the prospect of a hung Parliament even after the 15th general election that saw encouraging voter turnout, with both Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional claiming to possess the numbers to form a federal government.

Announcing to the media early this morning at 3 AM, PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin claimed he has received a letter from Istana Negara informing him of the prerequisites that need to be fulfilled to form the next federal government.

However, just half an hour later, PH held a press conference where Anwar Ibrahim cryptically declared that the pact are ready to form the federal government and had already crossed the 112 simple majority line – without revealing his exact numbers, or from where.

[Methinks, Anwar is on the verge of making a deal with BN. Malaysians shouldn't be surprised. That's the only way PH can form a government].

According to Malay Mail, PH could only win 82 seats, down from the 91 they held prior to the Parliament’s dissolution – and a far cry from the 121 they won with Bersatu as their component and ally in the historic 14th general election.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 9

Based on official results at 4:30 AM today, Pakatan Harapan won 76 seats, with coalition member DAP in Sarawak winning another five seats and Muda one seat, for a total of 82 seats.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) and PAS won 51 and 22 seats respectively, for a combined total of 73 seats.

Other parties that won seats are Barisan Nasional with 30 seats, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (22), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (six), Warisan (three), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (one) along with two independents.

There are still 3 more seats to be decided. Kota Marudu in Sabah and Baram in Sarawak are pending due to weather issues. Also, the election for Padang Serai seat in Kedah has been postponed due to the death of PH candidate M Karupaiya on Wednesday.

PN created major upsets to clinch three parliamentary seats in Penang – Permatang Pauh, Tasek Gelugor and Kepala Batas – in the 15th general election. PH won the other 10 parliamentary seats in Penang – Bagan, Bukit Mertajam, Batu Kawan, Nibong Tebal, Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Jelutong, Bukit Gelugor, Bayan Baru and Balik Pulau.

Incumbent P Prabakaran won handsomely with a majority of 22,241 in a ten-cornered fight, after collecting a total of 45,716 votes, ahead of Azhar Yahya (Perikatan Nasional-PAS), who obtained 23,475 votes and MIC vice-president A Kohilan Pillay (Barisan Nasional-MIC) with 10,398 votes.

His predecessor in the seat, former PKR vice-president Tian Chua, who ran as an Independent could only garner 4,603 votes. The other five challengers were lawyer Wan Azliana Wan Adnan of Pejuang (849 votes), Naganathan Pillai of Warisan (575 votes) and Zulkifli Abdul Fattah of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (137 votes). Three other Independent candidates were lawyer Siti Zabedah Kasim or better known as Siti Kasim with 653 votes, social media influencer Nur Fathiah Syazwana Shaharudin @ Cleo (628) and Too Cheng Huat (112).

And Warisan’s attempt to spread their wings to Peninsular Malaysia failed when their candidates failed to win any of the 25 seats they contested as of 2 AM.

The party have not fared well in this 15th general election, having just secured three seats so far, out of the 25 seats they contested in Sabah as well as the Labuan seat, a far cry from the eight seats they won in GE14.

Warisan president Shafie Apdal defended his Semporna seat, while his brother Yusof Apdal triumphed in Lahad Datu with a majority of 6,401 votes. Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis won Warisan’s third seat, winning in Kota Belud with a majority of 4,582 votes.

BN have returned to dominance in Negeri Sembilan after they regained two parliamentary seats from their rivals and defended three others in the general election.

BN’s Adnan Abu Hassan won the Kuala Pilah seat previously held by PN, while Esam Mohd Isa wrested the Tampin seat back from PH, Berita Harian reported. Both seats had been long-time BN fixed deposits until the last general election (GE14).

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 8

Pakatan Harapan are currently the coalition with the most seats, 56, after the results of 166 were released officially.

In second place are Perikatan Nasional that have 52 seats, well clear of Barisan Nasional who are in third with just 23 seats or just one more than the Gabungan Parti Sarawak parties. In Sabah, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah have six seats while other parties have four.

The results increasingly indicate that a government comprising two or more separate coalitions will be unavoidable.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 7

Pakatan Harapan's tally has improved to 56 seats.

Meanwhile, GPS have secured 20 seats, GRS 4 seats, BN 20 seats, PN 52 seats and others 5 seats.

PH’s Gobind Singh Deo has won the Damansara seat with a majority of over 124,619 votes. And Yeo Bee Yin has won the Puchong seat with a majority of over 57,000 votes.

Also, Chang Lih Kang wins Tanjong Malim, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad wins Setiawangsa, Fadhlina Sidek wins Nibong Tebal and Chow Kon Yeow wins Batu Kawan.

And Anwar Ibrahim has won the Tambun seat, defeating PN’s Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

In the meantime, BN’s SA Vigneswaran loses in Sungai Siput. And Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim receives a thrashing in the Baling federal seat, losing by 29,137 votes to PN’s Hassan Saad.

More bad news for BN. They have lost in all the seats contested in Melaka in a painful reversal of the coalition’s performance in the 2021 state election when they won a supermajority. [Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional shared the state’s six federal seats equally, taking three each].

These defeats are yet another clear sign of voters’ palpable rejection of the UMNO-led coalition in the 15th general election that the party demanded.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 6

Pakatan Harapan are not meeting expectations and their tally stands at only 51 seats.

GPS have 20 seats under their belt and GRS have 4 seats. BN have a mere 20 seats, PN are doing well with 42 seats and others with 4 seats.

PH’s Amirudin Shari seals victory in Gombak with a majority of over 12,000 votes – he defeats PN’s Azmin Ali. Nga Kor Ming too, wins in Teluk Intan with a majority of over 15,000 votes.

Meanwhile, Taufiq Johari wins in Sungai Petani, Howard Lee in Ipoh Timor, Lee Chean Chung in Petaling Jaya. And Syahredzan Johan is said to have triumphed in Bangi.

But Fuziah Salleh loses Kuantan to PN. And Mahfuz Omar loses Pokok Sena, also to PN.

Unofficial reports suggest that PN have won 26 out of 59 state seats in Perak.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 5

Pakatan Harapan have now obtained 50 seats. GPS secure 20 seats, GRS 4 seats, BN 20 seats and PN 38 seats, not to mention the one seat won by PBM.

PH’s Rodziah Ismail has won the Ampang seat with a majority of over 29,000 votes. PBM’s Zuraida Kamaruddin, the former MP, only managed 4,589 votes and losing her deposit in the process.

Just as sweet, R Ramanan has won the Sungai Buloh seat, defeating BN’s Khairy Jamaluddin. Yay-y-y!

Elsewhere, Sim Tze Tzin and M Kula Segaran have won the Bayan Baru and Ipoh Barat seats respectively.

At a press conference, Penang PH chief Chow Kon Yeow appears to concede that the coalition has lost the Permatang Pauh seat.

UMNO’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob handily wins the Bera seat. His two other party colleagues, Khaled Nordin and Johari Ghani have successfully overturned defeats in 2018 by reclaiming Kota Tinggi and Titiwangsa respectively. The latter defeated PH’s Khalid Samad.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 4

Pakatan Harapan have now obtained 49 seats. And GPS secure 20 seats, GRS 4 seats, BN 19 seats and PN 34 seats, not to mention the one seat won by PBM.

PH’s Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir has successfully defended Johor Baru, seeing off the challenge of BN’s Johan Ropi and PN’s Mohd Mohtaj Yacob. Salahuddin Ayub wins the Pulai seat with a majority of over 33,000 votes, defeating BN’s Nur Jazlan Mohamed. And R Yuneswaran manages to secure the Segamat seat. In Melaka, Adam Adli wins the Hang Tuah Jaya seat. And in Pahang, Young Syefura Othman wins the Bentong seat.

But Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has failed to defend his Kulim-Bandar Baharu seat. More worrisome, Nurul Izzah Anwar is trailing in the election for the Permatang Pauh seat, which could see the seat leave her family’s hand for the first time since 1978.

And the shocking news is that Mahathir Mohamad has been convincingly rejected by voters in Langkawi, Kedah, not only losing the seat but even his deposit. The Pejuang and Gerakan Tanah Air chairperson comes in fourth place in the contest that is won by PN’s Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah.

[Note: To keep their deposits, candidates must poll at least one-eighth of the total votes].

Already, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is claiming victory and boasting that PN are confident that they can form the new federal government.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 3

Pakatan Harapan have obtained wins in 40 seats. GPS possess 17 seats, BN 16 seats and PN 22 seats.

RSN Rayer wins the Jelutong seat with a majority of over 38,000 votes. Lim Guan Eng too wins the Bagan seat with a majority of over 49,000 votes. Both Rafizi Ramli and Fahmi Fadzil are also victorious in Pandan and Lembah Pantai respectively. And Adly Zahari triumphs in Alor Gajah.

Perikatan Nasional’s Radzi Jidin has pulled off a massive upset in Putrajaya, handing the incumbent Tengku Adnan Mansor his only ever defeat in the seat, according to unofficial results.

He is not the only major casualty. Tengku Zafrul crashes in Kuala Selangor. Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah loses in his long-time seat of Gua Musang in Kelantan. And Mahdzir Khalid, one of the so-called “Top Five” in UMNO, has been defeated in Padang Terap.

Indeed, PN are going great guns.

Muhyiddin Yassin has defended his Pagoh seat convincingly, seeing off his closest challenger by 10,007 votes. Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has officially won her Masjid Tanah seat in Melaka, according to the Election Commission. These successes continue a streak of victory for PN, which are increasingly looking to surpass Barisan Nasional in the race for Putrajaya.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 2

Unofficial results show that Pakatan Harapan have 27 wins.

In the meantime, GPS have 14 seats and BN and PN have both 10 seats each.

Aminuddin Harun is said to have won massively in Port Dickson. And PBM too won when Larry Sng retains his Julau seat.

Postal ballot movement have brought home over 35,000 overseas votes.

And Baram polling is suspended because adverse weather had prevented election officials from reaching the 11 voting centres “by air, land or water”.

GE15 Malaysia Votes: Update 1

Unofficial results suggest that Pakatan Harapan have secured victories in 14 seats (including Bandar Kuching, Bukit Bintang, Kota Kinabalu, and Tanjung).

Meanwhile, GPS won 7 seats, BN won 4 seats (including Ayer Hitam) and PN won one seat.

Maszlee Malik is said to have been defeated in Simpang Renggam, while Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Wong Chen have won their Muar and Subang seats respectively.

I Did My Civic Duty

I was at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Selangor, Jalan USJ 4/2, Subang Jaya this morning to do my civic duty. GE15 is today and I voted.

PH Leading, BN Trailing and PN Far Behind

PH leading, BN trailing and PN far behind, declared research-based ILHAM Centre, according to an FMT report today at 05:19 PM.

None of the three major coalitions will be able to secure a simple majority in the general election – although Pakatan Harapan are poised to win 86 seats. The other two camps, Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional will likely win 51 and 25 seats respectively.

Mahathir Mohamad’s Gerakan Tanah Air and Zuraida Kamaruddin’s Parti Bangsa Malaysia will only manage one seat each.

In East Malaysia, Ilham Centre said the ruling coalitions in Sabah and Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Gabungan Parti Sarawak will secure six and 18 seats respectively. Shafie Apdal's Warisan, meanwhile, are expected to win six seats.

Also, out of the 108 independent candidates contesting in the polls, Ilham Centre expect only one of them to win.

The think tank said their predictions are based on an 80% voter turnout.

But according to PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, Pakatan Harapan will win the 15th General Election with a simple majority if voter turnout exceeds 80 percent.

I don't know if I can believe the polls. Anyway, I just want to see Azmin Ali and Zuraida Kamaruddin get thrashed. And also Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin.

Political Pundits Predict BN to Win

Political pundits, in the main, believe Barisan Nasional will take control of the Malaysian government after tomorrow.

Already, Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research have predicted that BN will win the general election, though there remains “significant risks” of a hung Parliament.

They said the outcome of the Melaka and Johor state elections were likely indicators that BN had regained political momentum, adding that they had the advantage of being the longest-ruling coalition in the country.

They added that a Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional win was a little below 25% in probability, noting that PH have waned in momentum since their 2018 general election victory.

The research and analysis division of the Economist Group in the UK have predicted that BN too will emerge triumphant in the general election, but it remains to be seen if Ismail Sabri Yaakob would serve a full term as prime minister.

The Economist Intelligence Unit said while BN would form a government, they would not win enough seats for a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Whatever. Victory may yet come to Pakatan Harapan!

The "harapan" (hope) is that they did it in 2018, they can do it again tomorrow!

One Day to GE15

This Saturday is GE15, with 222 parliamentary seats at stake. Just one more day before Malaysians exercise their vote. And we'll know which bloc, whether PH, BN or PN will govern the country thereafter.

And we’re still wondering who from the UMNO camp is actually the prime ministerial candidate in the event they pull off a GE15 triumph. Ismail Sabri Yaakob or Ahmad Zahid Hamidi? Your guess is as good as mine.

For PH, it’s a clear choice. Anwar Ibrahim.

As for PN, it’s Muhyiddin Yassin. Unless Azmin Ali loses all patience and backstabs his boss in order to take over Bersatu. With him, you can never tell! He's the snake in the grass!

The rest act as spoilers. We can forget about Mahathir Mohamad's GTA (via Pejuang), Shafie Apdal's Warisan and Zuraida Kamaruddin's PBM.
