Liverpool Win First Piece of Silverware

The first piece of silverware of the English football season – the EFL Cup (aka Carabao Cup) – belonged to Liverpool after recording a dramatic 11-10 penalty shootout victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

It was a brilliant match where the two teams finished goalless – but don’t be fooled by the scoreline. There were no shortage of scoring opportunities. A couple of goals were negated by offside calls, and both teams blew opportunities to finish.

The scoreless tie in regulation and extra time meant the winners would be decided through a penalty shootout.

And after each team scored 10 successful penalties without a miss, the goalkeepers were both forced to step up for a kick. While Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher (left) buried his shot to make it 11 straight for the team, Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga launched a kick over the top crossbar.

Liverpool now hold the record for the most EFL Cup titles, with nine victories in the competition! It is the club's first success in the competition for a decade – and the first under Jürgen Klopp – with this latest triumph following previous wins in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2003 and 2012.

Well done, Reds! Oh, there's more titles ahead to go for!

Yesterday, too, Celtic dropped their first Scottish Premiership points of 2022 after being held to a goalless draw by a stubborn Hibernian – but still extended their lead at the summit.

According to EntGroup.cn, the latest box office numbers for the Chinese blockbuster “The Battle at Lake Changjin 2: Watergate Bridge” showed that the film’s overall cumulative stands at $609.33 million as at February 27, 2022.

The war epic deploys the same three directors, Tsui Hark, Chen Kaige and Dante Lam, as its October 2021 predecessor “The Battle at Lake Changjin”.

Sneaky Tricks Fast Food Restaurants Get You to Spend Money

Fast food is supposed to be cheap and convenient, but do you ever find yourself spending more on fast food than you expected to?

In fact, fast food is more expensive in Malaysia, as compared to ‘coffee-shop’ food.

Besides, places like McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's are experts at getting you to spend more money. Combos, upgrades, and multiple size options are just a few of the tricks used by fast food restaurants.

And I will readily admit that when I’m at a loss as to what to have during mealtimes, I’ll most likely turn to fast food! It’s just expedient to do so!

Wanna Smell Dog Poop for Two Months?

A UK plant-based pet food company intend to reward a dog owner to switch their canine's diet for two months and keep track of the pet's poop smells.

According to their website, dog owners are still feeding their pets processed meat and low quality animal by-products. They believe that replacing some of these troublesome ingredients with wholesome plant-based proteins is key to a healthy diet that's also kinder to the planet.

OMNI, a company specializing in plant-based dog food, announced they are seeking "a dedicated dog owner to sniff their dog's poop, to test the effect a plant-based diet has on their dog's digestion, stool odor and general health".

The winning applicant will be paid $6,685.82 to use OMNI's dog food for two months and report on the effects the food has on the animal's frequency of bowel movements, poop odor, energy levels, behavior, sleep patterns, weight and fur condition.

The dog will be examined by a veterinarian at the start and end of the two-month period, OMNI said.

The company's co-founder Shiv Sivakumar said customers have reported improved digestion, energy levels and general health after switching to the plant-based food.

"Not only that, we are getting feedback that their dogs' stools have improved in terms of colour, consistency and smell. So, what better way to demonstrate this than by being willing to pay a dog owner to sniff their dog's poop once they've switched to our brand of dog food?" Sivakumar explained on the OMNI website.

He said the company seek to confirm the reports by collecting data from the successful applicant.

"We know that this is quite a peculiar vacancy, but we also know that this is the way for us to put our money where our mouth is and show dog owners that plant-based dog food could improve their dog's stool, general health and digestive health", he added.

Applications are being accepted on the company's website through March 31, 2022.

Dark Comics with a Twist of Humor

Alvin Juano is a comic artist who creates comics under the name of “The Square Comics”.

Though his comics are very simplistic, they convey their message really well without much effort. The comic meaning is easy to understand and the artist’s sense of humor never disappoints.

My favorite selection:

Celtic Exit Europe

Celtic exit Europe! Yesterday, they were outclassed by Bodo/Glimt as the slick Norwegian champions dumped the Scots out of the Europa Conference League 5-1 on aggregate.

Chasing a 3-1 first leg deficit, hopes of making the last 16 were extinguished when Fotballklubben Bodø/Glimt scored two goals in the ninth and sixty-ninth minutes.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou (right) himself admitted post-match: “Europe for us was beyond us in terms of levels we needed to get to”.

Duh, I know it already!

Yesterday, Ahmad Fakhri had arranged for me to participate in a Toastmasters event – a joint meeting between Shell Cyberjaya Toastmasters Club and Siemens Malaysia Toastmasters Club – on Microsoft Teams.

Ahmad, by the way, was the General Evaluator.

As for me, I had two tasks. Firstly, I was a speech evaluator for Irene Ong Siew Kim (above photo) who did an L4 speech Strategic Relationships titled “The Influencer” and secondly, I did a sales pitch for our book “The Diamond in Your Speech”.

Anyway, I did what I was supposed to do.

The good news is that the book is already going into print!

Fake Boobs and Fake Butt

I have to admit that even after all these years, I still have a fondness for the 1988 American live-action/animated comedy mystery film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.

And who can forget Jessica Rabbit (right), a fictional character in the novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? and of course, its film adaptation, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Needless to say, Jessica is renowned as one of the best-known sex symbols in animation.

And Los Angeles-based artist Shay Rose (aka Crescent Shay) again – I had featured her in my post “A Cocktail Dress Made Out of 2,652 Pennies” published February 10 – showcased her creativity in making a Jessica Rabbit costume (or rather, how to fake an hourglass body shape).

Watch the video and like me, you’ll be in awe at her transformation – it’s Jessica Rabbit in the flesh!

Covid in Malaysia: Soaring High

Covid cases in Malaysia are ballooning but MOH are telling us that less than one percent are of Category 3 and above. So, no need to run scared leh!

But the Americans are spooked! On Tuesday, Malaysia together with Bhutan, Brunei and Iran were added to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s expanding list of highest-risk destinations for travel.

Note: The CDC place a destination at "Level 4: Covid-19 Very High" risk when more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents are registered in the past 28 days.

Liverpool haven't been this close to Manchester City since Christmas Day. The gap is now down to three points in the Premier League title race – which once was heavily in favour of the latter – after Liverpool demolished Leeds United 6-0 at a raucous Anfield.

This means we can look forward to the prospect of an exciting title race with 12 games left!

Two penalties from Mohamed Salah (15, 35), either side of Joel Matip's first goal of the season in the thirtieth minute, gave the Reds a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

The Whites managed to stem the flow for a period in the second half but Sadio Mane netted twice (80, 90) before Virgil van Dijk scored in injury time to secure a 6-0 victory.

This is the Liverpool I love – serious and relentless. Now just a three-point gap to close up!

Innocent Ad Banned Over Green Messaging

Drinks company Innocent have had an advert banned by UK’s Advertising Standards Authority after environmentalists reported them for claiming that drinking their smoothies is good for the environment.

The TV, YouTube and video on demand ads showed animated characters singing the lyrics: “We’re messing up the planet. We’re messing up real good”, against a backdrop of buildings and vehicles expelling pollutants, litter and dirty rivers.

An otter then produces a guitar and continues: “OK, let’s try this instead,” then sings: “Let’s get fixing up the planet. Fix it up real good”, as the background changes to a greener, brighter colour scheme with images of trees being planted.

The song concludes: “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Because there is no planet B. If we’re looking after nature she’ll be looking after me”, accompanied by images of people relaxing in a lush green environment, with many of them alongside bottles of Innocent drinks.

At the end of the ad, a voice-over states: “Innocent. Little drinks with big dreams for a healthier planet”.

The brand, which is known for its “wackaging” and is majority owned by Coca-Cola, has been making an effort to improve its climate credentials among consumers.

Complainants, including the activist group Plastics Rebellion, argued that the ad implied that drinking smoothies from a disposable plastic bottle was good for the environment.

In response, Innocent said they were a B Corp, which was a certification granted by the organisation B Lab to companies that demonstrated a high social and environmental performance. Innocent said they had committed to being carbon neutral by 2030, and had opened a carbon-neutral factory that ran on renewable energy and a cleaning system that reduced water usage by 75%.

They also said they were not trying to show that smoothies are good for the environment, and were instead making a call to action to their customers not to harm the planet.

The ASA, however, ruled in favour of the complainants. They found that Innocent’s advert drew a strong association between the drinks and a positive impact on the environment.

The ruling states that “many consumers would interpret the overall presentation of the ad to mean that purchasing Innocent products was a choice which would have a positive environmental impact”. Officials said they wanted evidence that this claim was in fact correct, and they were not satisfied with the response.

The ASA said: “Although we acknowledged that Innocent were undertaking various actions which were aimed at reducing the environmental impact of their products, that did not demonstrate that their products had a net positive environmental impact over their full life cycles. We also noted that their drinks bottles included non-recycled plastic and that the extraction of raw materials and subsequent processing of those materials in order to produce the bottle would have a negative impact on the environment”.

Innocent are now not allowed to use the advert in its current form, or make claims about the supposed environmental merits of their products without proof for them.

A spokesperson for Plastics Rebellion said: “You can’t be a major contributor to a global health and environmental emergency and claim to fix up the planet. Innocent are being disingenuous about the dangers of plastic’s threat to human health and environment, as well as trivialising the horrific scale of the problem by repeating the mantra ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. They’re guilty of brushing the plastic crisis under the carpet and trivialising it”.

Hulk Disappointment

When you order anything online, it's always good practice to check the reviews!

While the item may look awesome on the site, what you receive could look very different, as one Hulk fan found out the hard way.

Having hoped for a Hulk cake ahead of his big day, the superhero fan – whose name is Brent and all we know is that he’s from the US – had all sorts of ideas about how he wanted it to look, but couldn't have anticipated just how far from the mark, the end result would be.

And as you can see, the disappointing cake barely resembled the Hulk.

I’m a Hulk fan too and for sure, if I'm the recipient, I would be so-o-o-o ANGRY!!!

A Rebuttal to the Vegetarian Argument

For those who know me, I’m a carnivore through and through!

And please don't begrudge me eating meat. I didn't claw my way up the food chain just to eat vegetables.

But these days, you’re likely to encounter zealous plant-eaters – and they just love to ambush you in order to persuade you to denounce meat!

So, let me share with you the funniest rebuttal to the vegetarian argument:

Americans Put a Spin on the Medal Tally at Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

Americans clearly have no wish to follow international norms.

Take the case of the medals’ count at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics – they’ve ranked their medal table on overall total medals rather than total golds.

The rest of the world accepts that medal tallies are typically ranked by whoever has the most gold medals. So a nation in second could have won 50 medals, but if only five of them were gold, then they'd be behind a country that had won six medals as long as all six of them were gold. [Kindly refer to my post published yesterday].

In case, Americans are not aware of, the official Olympics website also ranks by gold medal count.

But they don't give a damn! They're just pleased that their country ended up by being BETTER than China because based on the total medal tally, they had collected 24 (which put them in position #5) – even if all they could muster were eight golds.

Compare this to the Chinese who had clinched nine golds but their total came up to 15 medals – and this pulled them down to position #11.

This trick by the Americans is disingenuous, deluding and deceitful!

Methinks, the US is acting from an inferiority complex. All I can say is Americans have this desire to dupe themselves!

The Johor state election next month is coming at a time of rapidly rising inflation, growing unemployment, struggling businesses and moreover, it's riding on the back of two flourishing years of Covid.

I don't think Malaysians want this – but UMNO decided to force it through, claiming a new mandate was necessary because the ruling BN-PN government were shaky with only a one-seat majority in the state assembly.

Obviously, there is more to it than that – anyway, as far as I’m concerned, it’s BN and PN pursuing their self-interests and indulging in a game of political football.

And unlike the previous three state elections held since 2018, Johor will be a different ball game altogether. Be prepared for a new political landscape come polling day on March 12.

I reckon the Johor polls is set to be a general election bellwether.
