Government Scheme Incentivises Tokyo Women to Wed Rural Males

A widely ridiculed Japanese government idea to woo Tokyo women into marrying men in rural areas by offering cash payouts and train tickets to matchmaking events has been scrapped, officials admitted Friday.

Bureaucrats had envisioned payments of up to 600,000 yen ($4,140) for women who got married and settled outside of Tokyo as part of efforts to reduce a yawning countryside gender gap, local media reported.

Hanako Jimi, minister of state for regional revitalisation, said she had instructed officials to "review" the plan and insisted that reports about the size of payments were "not true".

Media leaks about the scheme this week drew scorn on social media, where critics saw it as typical in a country where men dominate politics and other areas, more than in any other major industrialised economy.

"Did they think independent, motivated and educated women in the city would think, 'What? If I marry a local man and move to a countryside, I'll get 600,000 yen! I'll do it!'? ...Are they serious?" said one user on X.

Another said: "Do they still not get it? This is something people who see women as valuable only if they give birth would come up with".

As they age, many rural areas in the world's fourth-biggest economy are facing a depopulation crisis, with some small towns having hardly any – or even zero – children. One cause is that more young women than young men leave the villages and small towns they grew up in and move to big cities, especially Tokyo, for better opportunities in higher education and work.

Already, more than 40 percent of Japanese municipalities are at "risk of disappearing" due to the expected drop in the number of women in their 20s and 30s, a study by a private-sector expert panel suggested in April.

At the 2024 Korea Open badminton championship, Malaysian women's pair Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan have reached the semi-finals, having beaten Taiwan's scratch pair Teng Chun Hsun-Yang Chu Yun 21-19, 21-15 in 36 minutes yesterday.

They will face world No. 2 Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee of South Korea in the semi-finals.

A day earlier, the duo fought back from a set down to triumph over another Taiwanese scratch pair Nicole Gonzales Chan-Lin Chih Chun 21-23, 21-12, 21-12 in the second-round in 43 minutes.

This year's Merdeka Day post is accompanied by my choice from the many Merdeka videos published on YouTube. I picked the Etiqa video for the simple reason that it carries a meaningful message: Bahagia kerana budi, Gemilang berkat bersatu hati (In English: Happiness through kindness, Greatness through togetherness):

Fish and Chips Takeaways Are Almost £10 in the UK

Fish and chips is a British family favorite equally enjoyed around the table on a Friday night or out of the paper on an often overcast beach.

But the deep fried delicacy has seen the biggest price increase of some of the UK’s most popular takeaways, according to new figures. The average price for a portion of fish and chips rose more than 50% to nearly £10 in the five years to July – while the cost of a kebab went up 44% and pizza 30%.

Chip shop owners cite a "perfect storm" of costs in recent years, including soaring energy bills, tariffs on seafood imports and extreme weather hammering potato harvests.

This all means a family of four won't get much change out of a £50 note once they've forked out for their tea and added some mushy peas and cans of pop.

Fish and chips has been a staple on the menus of British families for decades, so much so that supplies of the two ingredients were protected during both world wars.

But prices have had to increase significantly. The average price of takeaway fish and chips was £9.88 in July this year, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). That was up by 52% compared with £6.48 in July 2019.

While the ONS says the figures are estimates, it suggests the cost of a fish supper has gone up more in percentage terms than that for pizza, or an Indian or Chinese main course.

As Angela Cartwright, owner of Kingfisher Fish Bar in Salford said: "People think that fish and chips is a cheap meal and it just isn’t. People are prepared to pay £15-20 for a pizza but they’re not prepared to pay it for a portion of fish and chips".

Jon Long, of Long John’s Fish and Chips in Dorset chipped in, highlighting that the current economic climate was the "toughest set of conditions" he had faced in his 30-plus years in the business.

"More and more pubs, hotels, chip shops, bakers and other businesses are shutting down due to crippling costs", he added.

China's state-owned carriers Air China and China Southern Airlines received their first C919 jets simultaneously on Wednesday, indicating the beginning of a new phase of operation of the C919 planes by multiple airlines.

The country's domestically developed single-aisle C919 planes are expected to be put into commercial operation on more routes and cover more areas, and the model is set to bring more vitality to China's civil aviation and even the global market, said He Dongfeng, chairperson of Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (or COMAC), the manufacturer of the C919.

So far, C919 has netted in excess of 1,000 orders at home and abroad, and nine aircraft have been delivered. Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines, the first customer of the C919, currently operate seven C919 jets on multiple domestic routes.

The Mystery of the 7 Suns

A surreal spectacle was witnessed in the sky over Chengdu, China and captured on video on August 20, 2024. In the viral images posted online, what appears to be seven suns can be seen.

Footage of the mysterious celestial phenomenon was shot by a woman identified as Ms Wang in a Chengdu hospital by Jam Press. So, what is behind the mind-boggling spectacle?

The astronomical anomaly, which lasted only about a minute, can be easily explained away as an optical illusion. It was caused by the light from the sun refracting as it passed through the multiple panes of glass in the 11th floor hospital window.

Only one of the suns is our own solar system’s star. The other six are merely copies or virtual images produced by the light bouncing between the layers of glass in the window.

While there are reports which claim that it was seen from several angles, netizens commenting on the otherworldly sight pointed out that there is only one video that captured the phenomenon. Had it been visible to the rest of the city rightly said that there would be multiple videos and pictures of the seven suns over Chengdu which has a population of over 16 million.

No matter the logical explanation people on social media had fun coming up with their own ideas of what was behind the celestial phenomenon.

“We’ve finally uncovered the truth about global warming”, quipped one amateur astronomer on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.

“This happened because of a magnetic field glitch that made parallel universes visibly manifest”, joked another space cadet. “The Cosmic Bureau has fixed the issue, and those responsible have been reprimanded”.

The heliospheric heptathlon also blew up on Reddit, where users compared the phenomenon to the Chinese myth where cosmic archer Hou Yi (ๅŽ็พฟ) shoots down nine of Earth’s 10 suns to stop the planet from burning up.

Fresh Malaysian Durians Sell Out in China

Word has it that Malaysian durians are already captivating the Chinese market, with the latest shipment of fresh durians selling out within hours of their arrival in China.

The positive news comes from none other than Mohamad Sabu, who shared his recent visit to Shenzhen, China on Facebook where he observed the packaging and distribution processes of fresh Malaysian durians by the Joy Wing Mau company.

And during the Malaysian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security's visit to Sam’s Club and Ole supermarkets in the same city, Mohamad Sabu also witnessed the high demand for Musang King durians from Malaysia.

In another Facebook post yesterday, he wrote that in China, fresh durians from Malaysia are considered premium and are more expensive than durians imported from Thailand and the Philippines.

Starbucks Malaysia operator, Berjaya Food Bhd (BFood) reported a net loss of RM91.5 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024 (FY2024) compared to a net profit of RM103.4 million in the previous year. The company's revenue also fell by 34.56 percent, dropping from RM1.1 billion to RM730.3 million.

BFood said the decline is attributed to a consumer boycott as per the current sentiment related to the Israel-Palestinian conflict and a one-time loss from the sale of their entire stake in Jollibean Foods Pte Ltd.

CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd have forecasted a revenue contraction in the financial year 2025 (FY2025) due to sluggish sales recovery from the prolonged boycott and increased competition from established and new coffee chains.

In a research note, they highlighted that this prognostication holds despite BFood’s plans to open new stores in Malaysia and the Nordic market next year.

The firm noted that BFood permanently closed three Starbucks outlets and temporarily suspended operations at 25 underperforming stores in Q4 FY2024 which ended June 30, 2024, due to the ongoing boycott. These closures contributed to a 5.8% quarter-on-quarter decline in revenue, bringing it down to RM130 million in Q4 FY2024.

As of Q4 FY2024, BFood operated 408 Starbucks stores and 60 Kenny Rogers Roasters outlets in Malaysia.

However, CIMB noted a narrowing of BFood’s core net losses to RM0.1 million in Q4 FY2024 from RM31.1 million in Q3 FY2024, after excluding exceptional items totaling RM38.1 million. This improvement was attributed to better profit margins following the closures of non-performing Starbucks stores.

FYI, for Q4 FY2024, BFood reported a net loss of RM38.2 million, against a net profit of RM17.2 million in the same quarter the previous year (4Q FY2023).

In a separate analysis, Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd in a note yesterday, said despite strong brand equity and active promotions, they expect boycott headwinds to stay, at least for the near term, which will greatly drag earnings. After all, Starbucks still make up a big chunk of BFood's revenue for Q4 FY2024 contributing 89 percent.

Kursk: A High-stakes Ukrainian Gambit

The Ukrainian military’s Kursk Region incursion was a high-stakes gambit aimed at forcing Russia to divert troops from a key sector of the front line, but Moscow didn’t take the bait, Ukraine’s top commander Colonel General Aleksandr Syrsky admitted on Tuesday.

Located in the west of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic, Pokrovsk and Kurakhovsk sit on key supply roads linking Donetsk with Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye. Pokrovsk is a major logistics hub for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who have heavily fortified the city since 2014. Russian forces have been conducting heavy attacks on Pokrovsk in recent weeks, with American officials acknowledging on Monday that the Russians have been making “incremental gains” toward the city.

You should know by now that Ukrainian forces invaded Russia’s Kursk Region on August 06, in the largest attack on internationally recognized Russian territory since the outbreak of hostilities in February 2022.

And so, Syrsky's revelation aside, the Ukrainian leadership has already proven to be inconsistent in explaining their goals for the Kursk operation. Initially, the office of Ukrainian leader [V]ladimir [Z]elensky said the capture of Russian territory was necessary to intimidate the Russian public and obtain a stronger position during eventual peace talks with Moscow.

The messaging later shifted, with [Z]elensky claiming that he aimed to create a buffer zone inside Russian territory and deter Moscow from ordering an attack on Ukraine’s Sumy Region, which borders Kursk.

However, anonymous sources have told The Economist that Syrsky was on the cusp of being fired in early August, and ordered the Kursk operation out of “desperation”. Faced with mounting losses in Donbass, Syrsky’s main objective “was to draw [Russian] troops away from the Donbass stranglehold, and to create bargaining chips for any future negotiation”, the British magazine reported last week.

As Kyiv's incursion into Kursk Oblast enters its fourth week, Ukraine claims control of 1,294 square kilometers and 100 settlements, including the town of Sudzha. And a total of 594 Russian soldiers have been captured, according to Syrskyi.

But the advance has been halted by the Russian military, although fighting in the region continues.

Latest figures from the Russian Defense Ministry show that the incursion has cost Ukraine more than 6,600 service members, 73 tanks, 34 infantry fighting vehicles, 62 armored personnel carriers, 432 armored combat vehicles, 201 vehicles, 45 artillery pieces, and 13 multiple rocket launchers, including four HIMARS and one MLRS, five surface-to-air missile launchers, nine electronic warfare stations, two counter-battery radars, an air defense radar, five pieces of engineering equipment, including two engineering demolition vehicles and one UR-77 demining unit.

Over the last three weeks, Moscow has published videos of its forces destroying Ukrainian tanks, weapons, and personnel involved in the incursion.

It is unclear how many troops the Ukrainian military sent into Kursk Region, although American media outlets claimed earlier this month that as many as 10,000 servicemen were pulled from other sectors of the front to take part in the offensive. In Tuesday’s report, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Moscow’s forces had engaged elements of Ukraine’s 22nd, 61st, and 115th mechanized brigades, 80th and 82nd air assault brigades, and 1004th Security and Service Brigade in the previous 24 hours.

In the Ukrainian armed forces, a brigade typically consists of between 1,000 and 8,000 men, although severe attrition has left some Ukrainian brigades operating with as little as 10% of their pre-conflict strength since April, according to Western military analysts.

Apty Alaudinov (right), Akhmat commander and deputy chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ Main Military-Political Department, suspects there may be active duty service members from NATO countries serving as mercenaries in the Kursk area.

"You must understand that they have thrown together a ragtag army. And they have deployed as many foreign mercenaries as they could to there", the Russian commander told Rossiya-1 television. "I guess there are people among these foreign mercenaries who are in the military of the NATO bloc", he added.

Later, Alaudinov confirmed to TASS that he meant active NATO servicemen.

Elsewhere on the Special Military Operation battlefield, Russian forces make steady advances. Outposts like Andriivka, Chigari, Ivano-Darivka, Karlivka, Kostiantynivka, Lozuvatske, Lysychne, Orlovka, Pishchane, Pivdenne, Pokrovsk, Prohres, Rozivka, Sokil, Synkivka, Urozhaine, Volchie, Voskhod, Yevhenivka and Yurivka have all fallen into their hands.

On Monday, Russia launched a “massive” missile and drone attack aimed at energy infrastructure across Ukraine, marking the biggest air assault since the SMO began, Ukrainian officials said. Moscow has since followed that with a second wave of strikes early Tuesday morning.

The nationwide strikes used “more than 100 missiles of various types and around 100 Shahed drones. But it would seem that Ukraine didn't bat an eyelid because according to Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk, they shot down 102 of the missiles and 99 attack drones. And if you believe him, it means Ukraine virtually escaped unscathed!

Whatever. Today is already Day 917. Methinks, the SMO is taking too long. I would really like to see Russia deliver a decisive knockout blow to the rogue state that is Ukraine and end the fighting.

Health Advice From 100-year-olds

The health and lifestyle choices of the world’s oldest people should not be taken as a blueprint for longevity for others, Richard Faragher, a professor of biogerontology at the UK’s University of Brighton warned. ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

According to the scientist, the question of why some people live to 100 and some don’t is still debated. Most experts point to either luck or good genetics as the likely reasons for longevity. He stressed, however, that experts agree on one thing – people who want to live longer should “never, ever take health and lifestyle tips from a centenarian”.

Really? I would have thought these people having gone through long lives should know better!

The caution comes just days after the passing of the world’s oldest woman, Maria Branyas Morera, who died in her sleep at the age of 117 on August 19. Morera attributed her longevity to “order, tranquility… no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity, and staying away from toxic people”. Her demise was preceded by the death of the world’s oldest man, 114-year-old Juan Vicente Perez Mora, this April. Mora’s secret to a long life was to “work hard, rest on holidays, go to bed early,” and to “drink a glass of aguardiente [a strong alcoholic drink] every day”.

In an interview with The Guardian published on Saturday, Faragher said that, like Morera and Mora, most centenarians do not speak of exercise or healthy diet when commenting on their long lives. He noted that some of the world’s oldest people admit they were smokers and drank alcohol freely, which “flies in the face of a lot of epidemiological evidence we have on how to extend your healthy life expectancy”.

“Merely because you have survived smoking 60 a day doesn’t mean that smoking 60 a day is good for you… The fact that [centenarians] do many of these unhealthy things and still just coast through says they’re either lucky or typically very well endowed”, Faragher (left) asserted.

Following Morera’s passing, the oldest living person in the world has become 116-year-old Tomiko Itooka of Ashiya, Japan who was born on May 23, 1908, according to the US Gerontology Research Group. She enjoys the simple pleasure of eating bananas and starts her day with her favorite drink, Calpis (a Japanese milk-based soft drink). The oldest person to have ever lived was France’s Jeanne Louise Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122, according to Guinness. And she had shared that wine was her secret to longevity.

If I may, I would add Coca-Cola to the list. [Remember... Coke's 1976 slogan was "Coke adds life"].

Monkey King Worshiped as God in Fuzhou

Most Chinese associate the Monkey King (or Qi Tian Da Sheng) with the monkey-turned-demon-slayer in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) epic novel.

But in Fuzhou in east China's Fujian Province, he is worshiped as a tutelary deity.

According to China Daily, the origin of the Monkey King belief has many versions: ape worship, a monkey Buddha, a monkey demon converted by a goddess into the heavenly cause – there are a thousand Monkey Kings in a thousand priests' eyes due to a lack of historical records.

One thing is certain: people in Fuzhou were worshiping the Monkey King long before the classic literary work "Journey to the West" made the dramatis personae a household name. Historical records suggest the city had a temple for the monkey in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Some academics say the belief can be traced to the ancient worship of apes.

"Prehistoric Chinese in the mountains worshiped monkeys. The powerful Monkey King figure in the novel met the believers' expectation for an almighty god and made the belief more popular", according to Gan Mantang, a sociology professor at Fuzhou University.

Vague as his identity might be, the monkey god never lacks followers.

Belief in the Monkey King is prominent in Fujian Province, and in Fuzhou, he is worshiped in about 700 to 800 temples, it is claimed.

In the 1990s, Qitian Temple the temple regarded as the Monkey King's "ancestral temple" on Fuzhou's Pingshan Mountain registered 243 offshoot temples, including in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.

China’s Ban on Japan’s Seafood Benefits Other Countries, Especially Russia

One year on: Japan continues dumping of nuclear-contaminated wastewater.

Japan's seafood industry continues to suffer one year after China suspended all aquatic product imports from its neighboring country over food safety concerns due to Tokyo's move to dump nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the sea, while seafood products from other countries have gained significant share in the Chinese market, industry experts said on Sunday.

While Japan has been calling for the removal of the ban, Chinese officials and experts stressed that the move is to protect food safety, and they urged Tokyo to address serious concerns over its dumping of nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the sea. Industry experts said that Japan will continue to miss out on the continuously growing Chinese seafood market.

On August 24, 2023 China banned imports of all aquatic products from Japan after Japan, disregarding serious concerns from China and the broader international community, started dumping nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.

Following the move, Japan's seafood exports to China, one of the biggest importers of seafood, plunged, and the Japanese seafood industry was adversely affected. While claiming that Japan's scallop industry has overcome the crisis triggered by the ban, the Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, reported on Sunday that inventories of frozen scallops have piled up and warehousing costs have increased losses.

Overall, Japan's exports of aquatic products to China, including pearls and coral, plunged from 87.1 billion yen ($592 million) in 2022 to 61 billion yen in 2023 and only 3.5 billion yen in the first half of 2024, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

But seafood imports into China from other countries, including Russia, have grown significantly. For example, Russia's exports of seafood to China reached 1.29 million tons at the end of 2023, an all-time high, Russian news agency TASS reported on July 10.

Ukraine Loses Two Thirds of US-supplied Battle Tanks

Ukraine has lost two thirds of its US-supplied Abrams M1 main battle tanks in the space of only half a year, Military Watch Magazine has reported.

The US-based "provider of reliable and insightful analysis into military and military related affairs across the world" said in an article on Thursday that, according to its estimates, “close to 20” out of 31 tanks provided to Kiev by Washington have already been destroyed by Russian forces.

The latest Abrams was blown up in Russia’s Kursk Region, Military Watch Magazine said, based on videos uploaded by Russian Telegram channels. And the M1 in question had “a significantly improved” explosive reactive armor, as Ukraine took steps to increase the protection of the US-made tanks, “particularly after they took heavy losses in their first engagements with Russian forces in February-April 2024”, the report read.

However, the Abrams still could not withstand a projectile from a hand-held anti-tank missile system, likely a Kornet, with which it had reportedly been hit, it stressed.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that, since the start of its incursion into Kursk Region on August 06, Ukraine has already lost more than 5,550 troops and hundreds of units of military equipment, including 71 tanks.

Arne Slot's first Premier League home game in charge of Liverpool ended in a 2-0 victory as the Reds continued their winning start to the season against Brentford.

Luis Diaz's clinical 13th-minute finish on his 100th appearance for the club since joining from Porto in 2022 came off a Mohamed Salah- and Diogo Jota-produced counter attack. And the Reds sealed the points in the seventieth minute when Diaz slid a pass through for Salah, who clipped home with his left foot, the Egyptian's second goal of the season.

Fresh Malaysian Durians To China

Malaysia began exporting fresh durians to China on Saturday, two months after signing the Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Fresh Durian from Malaysia to China. Previously, only frozen durians could be exported to the country.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup said that for a start, 40 metric tonnes of fresh durians, including varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, and IOI, from eight exporting companies, will be shipped to China in three separate batches.

FYI, the fresh durians are transported via air cargo to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport in Henan Province and which serves as a major cargo hub in China – and then distributed throughout the country in under 24 hours, reaching major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, which are key markets for the fresh durians.

Yesterday, Celtic brushed aside St Mirren 3-0 to continue an impressive start to the Scottish Premiership season and going two points clear of Rangers after clinching their third straight win.

Skipper Callum McGregor scored three minutes and fellow midfielder Reo Hatate added a second in the 33rd minute as Celtic ignored the inclement weather to take control. And defender Alistair Johnston swept in a third in the 71st minute to complete a convincing victory for the champions who have demonstrated their intentions early.

Next up for Celtic is the game against Rangers in the first Old Firm match of the season next Sunday.

Bizarre Backstory on Black Myth: Wukong

Undeniably, "Black Myth: Wukong" is a resounding success, having sold a remarkable 10 million copies in just 3 days. As well as an eye-watering three million concurrent players across all platforms.

I don't know much about video games, nonetheless, I'm impressed by it. I daresay it has truly presented itself to be an incredible game.

As reviews poured in, it’s becoming clear that critics have generally enjoyed it. It garnered an 82 percent rating on OpenCritic, receiving praise for its sleek, cinematic visuals and exciting, high-octane combat scenes – but more importantly, it successfully translates the Chinese mythology of monkey god Sun Wukong into a compelling action RPG.

Amidst it all, there is this bizarre backstory that alleged that Sweet Baby Inc., a Canadian narrative consultancy company had tried to blackmail Game Science to pay $7 million in "guidance fees", ostensibly to incorporate DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) elements into "Black Myth: Wukong". And when the developer refused to pay up, it is claimed games media coordinated a campaign to attack the Chinese studio. Because, you know, journalists are corrupt and all that.

As a response to this rejection of their service, Rebekah Valentine, an IGN journalist wrote a hit piece accusing Game Science of fostering a culture of sexism and misogyny. However the write-up has been said to contain maliciously mistranslated tweets that were meant to paint Game Science in a negative way.

To make matters worse, ScreenRant and Gamespot additionally doubled down in their reviews of "Black Myth: Wukong", referencing IGN's angry article on Game Science.

The Sweet Baby Inc. story has gained traction amongst gamers – it's all over Youtube which is where I first found out about this – but whether it is true or not, I really cannot tell. I did, however, track down an X post by @Pirat_Nation published June 14, 2024 on the subject in question but I should state here that it hardly works as proof.

But neither do I want to discount it. After all, many Western companies (e.g. American Airlines, Cisco, Disney, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Novartis, Starbucks) have enthusiastically embraced the woke agenda and Sweet Baby Inc. may be one of them.

The above aside, I do know that there are many, many "diverse" characters in "Black Myth: Wukong" and amongst them:

I reckon this proves there is, indeed, DEI in "Black Myth: Wukong"!

Stranded US Astronauts to Return Only in February 2025

NASA have decided on Saturday that the two US astronauts who have now been stuck in space since June 05 will only return to Earth next year with rival SpaceX.

Under the new plan, the SpaceX Crew-9 mission will take off in late September, but carrying only two passengers instead of the originally planned four. It will remain moored to the International Space Station until its scheduled return in February, bringing back its own crew members plus Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams.

Ten years ago, following the retirement of the Space Shuttle, NASA ordered new vessels from both Boeing and SpaceX that could ferry astronauts to and from the ISS. With two such vehicles available, NASA reasoned, there would always be a back-up in case one of the two experienced problems. But Elon Musk’s SpaceX beat Boeing to the punch and have been the lone vehicle used to taxi astronauts for the past four years.

And this year’s crewed Starliner flight, which followed years of delays and disappointments during the craft’s development, was meant to be a last test of the vehicle before it enters regular operations.

The Saturday decision marked a fresh public relations embarrassment for Boeing, meaning the two astronauts will have to spend a total of eight months in orbit, not the eight days as originally planned. Besides it being a further blow to the already tarnished image of the beleaguered company whose airplane arm have been beset in recent years with concerns about safety and quality control.

FYI, Starliner will return to Earth uncrewed.

Burglar Busted After Getting Distracted by Bedside Book

On Tuesday night, a 38-year-old unidentified Italian scaled an apartment building in Rome's Della Vittoria neighborhood and climbed into a private residence via a balcony door. He was in the very process of burglarizing the apartment when a book on a bedside table caught his eye.

The book, titled "Gli dรจi alle sei: L'Iliade all'ora dell'aperitivo" by Giovanni Nucci, an analysis of "The Illiad" from the point of view of the gods. According to a translation of the publisher's description, the text also "highlights the interpretative power of the myth to understand our current situation: the pandemic, the war, the climate crisis, the arrogance of the political classes, the exploitation of resources, the dissipation of childhood, the crisis of patriarchy and the female condition, sexual identity, the incompatibility between the old power and the new generations".

Sounds fascinating right? The burglar must have agreed because he apparently sat down on the bed and began to read it. Shortly after, the apartment's owner, a 71-year-old man, awoke and saw the intruder.

"The burglar then tried to escape from the same balcony but was arrested by police who arrived after being called by the owner", reports Wanted In Rome. Police found the man in possession of a bag of designer clothes, likely stolen earlier that night from another house".
