Malaysian ice cream shop Inside Scoop have discontinued their "Pei Pa Koa" cough syrup flavored ice cream effective Tuesday, July 30 on the advice of the health ministry.
This comes just one day after they made the flavor available at their outlets for a limited time.
The company made the announcement via Facebook:
KKM (Malaysia's Health Ministry) had said the cough syrup was registered under the Drug Control Authority, to relieve sore throat and cough, and that pregnant women are advised against taking the product.
"The preparation or sale of any adulterated food is prohibited under Section 13B(2) of the Food Act 1983. Those convicted of the offence could face up to five years in jail, a maximum RM20,000 fine, or both", they added.
The ministry ordered all business premises selling the "Pei Pa Koa" flavored ice cream to halt sales immediately, and all adverts of the product to be taken down.
They urged food industry players to act more responsibly to ensure that their products comply with the Food Act 1983 and other related regulations.
