Cracks of Color

Jan Vormann is a German artist who uses LEGO bricks in his artwork. He patches up broken sides of buildings and walls with legos in a beautiful way that turns the structures into art. 

This is one of my favorite uses of Legos that I've come across. And if I may add, it is an incredible and uplifting art initiative! 

Vormann’s global project, known as Dispatchwork, beautifully bridges the gap between childhood playfulness and public architecture. By filling the crumbling, fractured spaces of old stone and brick buildings with vibrant, multicolored LEGO bricks, he doesn't just "fix" a wall – he draws attention to its history while injecting a burst of joy into the urban landscape.

What makes it even better is the interactive nature you mentioned. It transforms regular city dwellers from passive observers into active creators, reminding everyone that public spaces belong to the community and can be reimagined through collective creativity. 

The project was born in Bocchignano, a small medieval village in the Sabina region of Italy. In 2007, he was participating in the "20 Eventi" contemporary art festival in the region. Inspired by the village's historic ruins, he began spontaneously filling the gaps, cracks, and missing sections of its ancient stone walls with bright, multicolored LEGO bricks. 

This temporary intervention launched his famous global street art movement known as Dispatchwork. He describes it as a "multiplayer game" for cities. 

The artistic concept rests on three core pillars:

• Embracing Impermanence: Vormann intentionally does not use glue or cement. The structures are meant to be temporary. He welcomes the fact that children often take the loose LEGO bricks back home to their toy boxes. 
• Highlighting History through Contrast: Inserting modern, mass-produced plastic into ancient, eroded masonry draws immediate visual attention to the wear and tear of historical sites. It emphasizes how cities continuously repair themselves over centuries. 
• Democratic Public Art: The project bypasses traditional art institutions. Through his website, Vormann invites anyone worldwide to "patch" their own neighborhoods, making the act of urban preservation a collaborative and playful community experience.

Vormann and a global network of volunteers have installed LEGO patches across more than 40 cities worldwide. Notable historical and urban sites include Berlin in Germany, New York City in USA, Toulouse in France, Aberdeen in Scotland, and even Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia! 

In KL, the Dispatchwork installation was famously initiated at the historic Pudu Jail (specifically along Jalan Hang Tuah). The intervention done in April 2016 was carried out by independent global contributors named Kaffy, Wikkee, and Caibin, who submitted their work directly to the official Dispatchwork archive. 

True to the collaborative nature of the project, they chose the crumbling perimeter of this notorious, century-old prison site to insert bright, modern toy bricks into the gaps of its weathered structures. 

It is important to highlight that because Jan Vormann’s philosophy strictly dictates never using glue or permanent fixtures, these plastic patches are highly transient. 

Over the years, much of the original Pudu Jail complex has been demolished or heavily redeveloped into modern commercial projects (like Lalaport BBCC), meaning the original 2016 bricks have likely been removed, built over, or taken home by passersby.

Chinese Filmgoers Praise Malaysian Cinema

Malaysian cinema with universal themes are striking a chord with audiences worldwide, helping local films break through international boundaries. 

Moviegoers in China have enthusiastically praised five high-calibre Malaysian productions featured at the China-Malaysia Film Festival 2026, held alongside the 12th Xingtan Cultural Season. 

Officiated by National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairperson Hans Isaac, the festival was co-organised by Alpha Unit Films & Distribution Sdn Bhd and China Film Industry Group Limited, with support from Finas. 

According to Bernama, the featured line-up included A Mighty Adventure, Ah Beng Vs Liang Po Po, Babah, Abah Says Uncle Mike, and The Last Dive (also known as Takdir Terakhir). 

These five films span multiple languages and storytelling formats: 

• A Mighty Adventure: Silent/No dialogue. It relies entirely on CG animation, visual storytelling, and a universal musical score. 
• Ah Beng Vs Liang Po Po: Mandarin (with some Cantonese). 
• Babah: Malay. 
• Abah Saya Uncle Mike: Primarily Malay (with some multi-lingual interactions, reflecting the real-life Chinese father raising Malay children).
• The Last Dive: Primarily Malay/English. 

Dr Wendy Wong, executive director of Produksi Seni 2020, noted that the response to The Last Dive exceeded all expectations. 

"Chinese film fans appreciate our productions because they tackle pressing global issues. In fact, many praised our films as being on a par with Hollywood", she shared. 

Meanwhile, Nadia Mohd Nadzri, producer of Babah (produced by Nads Media Entertainment Sdn Bhd), emphasised that the film's focus on family values holds timeless appeal across East Asia.

Ryan Lim, managing director of Alpha Unit, said that the team's primary hurdle was selecting titles that would genuinely resonate with a Chinese audience. 

"It was crucial to pick the right mix of films. We held extensive discussions with our partners in China to ensure the line-up hit the right mark", Lim confided. 

"We hope to bring even more high-quality Malaysian films to China soon, and after such a successful start, we are very optimistic about future collaborations". 

Malaysian Tourism is Making Waves

Malaysia’s travel sector is riding an unprecedented wave of global popularity, drawing a record-breaking 21.12 million international visitors in the first half of 2026 alone. 

This massive influx of travelers has transformed the nation's airports into bustling global gateways. 

According to Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), passenger traffic jumped 3.4% year-on-year to 36.7 million in the first seven months of the year, fueled by a powerful surge in summer travel demand from Europe, the Middle East, and across Asia.

[I had followed the Asian Games badminton news only for updates on Pearly-Thinaah. And for sure, from today, I'll be following women's singles squash too].

Malaysia's women's badminton team kicked off their 2026 Asian Games campaign on Sunday with a dominant 3-0 sweep against Hong Kong. 

In that opening tie, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan earned the second point with a comfortable 21-11, 21-17 win over world No. 22 Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam. 

However, the team's run came to an end on Tuesday during the quarter-finals, where Malaysia bowed out with a 3-1 defeat to defending champions South Korea. 

Despite the team's elimination, Pearly and Thinaah provided a massive highlight by securing a brilliant 22-20, 21-17 victory over world No. 2 South Korea's Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee. 

While the overall exit stung, the top pair's defiant victory had sent a clear message that they are rediscovering their peak form at just the right time. And that's great news, methinks!

The Urban Canvas

Creative minds are turning plain urban walls, ordinary cracks and broken fixtures into brilliant visual surprises. 

It is proof that our city streets are actually giant, open-air galleries just waiting to make you smile.

Crowdfunding a Conviction

UMNO quickly established a solidarity fund, "Tabung Solidariti Najib Razak", on Friday to help settle the former prime minister's RM50 million fine. 

Settling this reduced amount is a prerequisite for his conditional royal pardon, which allows him to serve his remaining prison sentence under house arrest until August 2028. 

The party's secretary-general announced that collections started strong at RM165,645 in the first hour, surged to RM634,562.02 by the third, and reached RM1 million by 09:30 AM the following day.

Since then, there have been no updates on the amount collected. Just that, it is more than RM1 million.

According to UMNO, the party could potentially raise RM30 million if their estimated 3.8 million members contributed at least RM10 each.

So you know, I'm not questioning this donation drive because it is entirely normal in the Malaysian political landscape; after all, parties like PKR and DAP have historically launched similar solidarity crowdfunding campaigns for their leaders under legal pressure.

Yet, while the mechanism itself is culturally familiar, it highlights a stark and uncomfortable paradox in the eyes of everyday citizens. For many, it underscores a deeply troubling irony, captured perfectly by the public sentiment:

And because UMNO had circulated their bank account details to solicit donations for Najib, critics have used the opportunity to lob insults at him. 

Screenshots circulating on social media purportedly showed teeny-tiny transfers of merely one or five sen to the Najib Razak Solidarity Fund. 

Bank transfers allow the donor to attach a message to the recipient. This was utilised by detractors to include derogatory comments about Najib. 

Among other things, they used the field to label the recipient, meaning Najib, with the derogatory Malay slang “bapak sakau negara”, roughly meaning “Malaysian father of embezzlement”. 

Other transfers also made references to previous allegations of crimes and offences linked to Najib. 

Some also took it to the next level, by editing a screenshot to claim that they had paid the entire RM50 million to Najib. 

Another even posted an edited screenshot claiming that financier Jho Low had transferred RM51 million to Najib. [Low, accused of involvement in the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal alongside Najib, remains a fugitive].

Article 42: Constitutional Prerogative or Double Standard?

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said has affirmed that the power to grant pardons is expressly provided for under Article 42 of Malaysia's Federal Constitution and should not be construed as placing anyone above the law. 

I don't believe anybody is questioning it – but critics and legal watchdogs argue that applying such high-level discretion to prominent corruption cases undermines public trust, highlighting a perceived double standard in how justice is served to elites versus ordinary citizens.

Liverpool scraped through 1-0 against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League match yesterday.

If you haven't heard yet, the big news about Najib Razak has dropped!  

Following the Friday announcement that the Malaysian King consented to allowing the Malaysian former prime minister (left) to serve his remaining term under house arrest, social media has been flooded with mixed reactions. 

But perhaps nothing captures the raw public sentiment quite like this biting piece of political satire. It is a perfect little social commentary snippet, framed through the brutal, innocent logic of a teen asking their parents a very simple question:

Adakah selepas ini, pesalah2 rasuah boleh membuat permohonan tahanan rumah? 

Anak : Mak/Ayah siapa yg kena tahanan rumah tu?

House Arrest for Former PM: Malaysian King Gives Consent 👑

Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was granted a conditional royal pardon that allows him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence for grand corruption under house arrest rather than behind bars. 

He will be confined at an unspecified location until August 2028, according to a statement issued by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department following a Pardons Board meeting on Friday. He will also have to pay the previously lessened fine of RM50 million. 

“He has to fulfil all conditions set”, the statement read. “Any breach will void the conditional pardon and he will be immediately sent back to prison”. 

The move by the King, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, follows an unusual Pardons Board meeting that was called shortly after the previous summit on September 11 deferred a decision on Najib’s application. 👑

The Pardons Board rarely meets and there is no fixed calendar for a meeting. 

Najib has been in custody since August 2022 after being found guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of government company 1Malaysia Development Bhd. 💰💰💰💰💰

The original sentence was for 12 years in jail and a RM210 million fine before the punishment was lessened in 2024 by the previous King, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. 👑

Najib was subsequently sentenced to another 15 years’ imprisonment in December 2025 after being convicted for a more serious crime at 1MDB, although he is appealing against the decision. 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰

The sentence is to run after he finishes his SRC jail term in August 2028. 

Penang Gazettes Hungry Ghost Festival as State Heritage

In Malaysia, Penang has officially recognized the Teong Guan Phor Thor, or Hungry Ghost Festival, as an intangible cultural heritage item under the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011. 

The gazettement actually took effect on June 25, 2026, following approval by the state government to safeguard local traditions. 

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow noted that the move highlights the diverse religious traditions practiced by the Chinese community. 

Celebrated during the seventh lunar month, the festival features large "Tai Su Yeah" (King of Hades) effigies, getai stage shows, and traditional Chinese opera.

Despite its association with ghosts, the Hungry Ghost Festival serves a deeper purpose. The event is more about teaching the younger generation the importance of filial piety, doing good deeds, and respecting their ancestors. These values are integral to the festival’s enduring relevance and significance.

In the second round of the China Masters 2026 today, Malaysia’s world No. 5 women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan suffered an agonising defeat against Thailand's up-and-coming Benyapa-Nuntakarn Aimsaard. 

The Thai sister duo, ranked world No. 43, took the match in three hard-fought games in 67 minutes: 21-16, 17-21, 21-19. 

Pearly and Thinaah were originally drawn to face China's Luo Yi and Wang Tingge in the round of 32. However, following a wave of late withdrawals from top-seeded pairs, a Seed Withdrawal Movement (SWM) reshuffled the draw, giving the Malaysians a direct first-round bye straight into the round of 16.

I am really disappointed. It's unforgivable. Another tournament, another self-inflicted disaster from Pearly and Thinaah. As the world No. 5 pair, how are they still handing over the opening game like charity? 

This toxic habit of losing the first game is a ticking time bomb, and it again blew up in their faces against a pair ranked No. 43 in the world! They were handed fresh legs and a massive physical advantage on a silver platter. 

What did they do with it? They wasted it by playing catch-up yet again, turning what should have been a straightforward win into an exhausting three-game torture.

Three Former Prime Ministers in Court on Same Day

In an unusual day in a Malaysian court, three former prime ministers were at the same court complex to face separate legal proceedings of their own on August 27. 

Najib Razak (6th PM), Muhyiddin Yassin (8th PM) and Ismail Sabri Yaakob (9th PM) were all at the Kompleks Mahkamah Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim, drawing attention from the public and the media. 

Najib is in court for the ongoing hearing of a $5.6 billion civil suit filed by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) against him and five other former 1MDB directors while Muhyiddin’s graft trial linked to the Jana Wibawa program is also being heard at the High Court in the same complex. 

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri was charged with “failing to declare assets, including RM14.7 million in cash, millions in various foreign currencies, as well as gold bars”, as reported by the Bernama news outlet. 

He was initially scheduled to be charged last week but the proceedings was postponed due to health complications. 

The sight of three former national leaders in court highlights a dramatic, and often satirized, moment in Malaysian political and judicial history, illustrating a very busy period for the legal system regarding the country's former leadership.

Termites: 1, My Savings: 0

A Malaysian woman was left heartbroken after discovering that roughly RM2,000 of her hard-earned savings had been severely damaged by termites. 

Sharing photos of the decimated RM20 banknotes on Threads, user @anak_orangsebelah revealed the cash had been stored underneath a cupboard, leaving several notes with nibbled corners and others riddled with gaping holes. 

Unsure whether to laugh or cry over the loss, she turned to social media for advice on how to salvage the ruined cash. 

The post has received over 600,000 views in three days. 

User @nysahassan suggested taking the notes to a commercial bank or to Bank Negara Malaysia. 

"Just go to the bank and tell them you'd like to replace damaged cash, and they'll assess it. But if the damage is severe, you might have to bring it to Bank Negara", the user said. 

Another user, @byenimoo, commiserated by sharing how their father similarly lost RM10,000 after termites devoured his hidden stash, including the crucial serial numbers. 

In the midst of heated discussion on how to save the cash, user @aiaidudurara reminded the public that depositing money into a bank account remains the safest way to avoid such unexpected heartbreak.

Liverpool and Nottingham Forest played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield today, marking a chaotic home debut for the Reds' new head coach, Andoni Iraola. 

For the second week running, Liverpool had to show immense resilience to fight back from behind and secure a point.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when their midfielder threaded a ball through to their forward, who calmly beat Alisson Becker. The Reds ramped up the pressure in the second half. International Students Contribute RM20B Annually to Malaysia's Economy

The presence of about 167,000 international students in Malaysia currently contributes around RM20 billion annually to the country's economy through spending on tuition fees and living expenses, according to a New Straits Times report published August 23, 2026. 

In fact, Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) chief executive officer Novie Tajuddin (left) had asserted that based on a study conducted by EMGS, each international student spends an average of about RM10,000 a month throughout their stay in the country. 

And the five main countries currently contributing international students to Malaysia are China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

He noted that Malaysia is now recognised as one of the world's 14 leading higher education destinations, demonstrating that the country is increasingly becoming a preferred choice among international students pursuing their studies. 

"This shows that we have become a competitor in global higher education", he trumpeted. 

Novie noted the number of international students in Malaysia had increased by about 23 percent over the past three years, indicating growing interest among foreign students in pursuing their studies in the country. And he affirmed that Malaysia aims to attract 500,000 international students by 2035, as outlined in the 10-year Malaysia Higher Education Blueprint.

A Bizarre Call to NYC’s Mayor to Fix Malaysian Potholes

A viral social media campaign where Malaysian internet users are jokingly appealing to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to fix the chronic pothole problem on Malaysian roads. 

The meme storm ignited after a viral TikTok video showcased a Malaysian citizen pleading directly to Mayor Mamdani for help after suffering a road accident caused by a major pothole. The video concluded with a satirical "Malaysia Madani" poster featuring Mamdani’s face against the Kuala Lumpur skyline. 

The joke stems from a long-running linguistic coincidence. When Mamdani won the NYC mayoral primary, international commentators frequently mispronounced his surname as "Madani". 

This sounds identical to "Malaysia Madani", the signature nation-building slogan of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Malaysians quickly adopted Mamdani as a satirical, honorary member of the Malaysian government using the hashtag #MalaysiaMamdani. 

The viral appeal is fueled by Mamdani’s reputation for highly responsive public service in New York City. The mayor previously made waves on social media for personally joining road crews to patch up infamous NYC bumps and rapidly acting on local TikTok requests to fill potholes. 

This trend proves how a single social media complaint can blow a localized issue entirely out of proportion, even when official statistics show that formal pothole accident reports remain relatively low. 

What transformed a solitary TikTok video into an international news story was a perfect storm of internet culture, linguistic coincidences, and shared civilian experiences. By wrapping a universal everyday frustration in a bizarre political pun, Malaysian netizens turned a minor grievance into a viral masterclass in satire – and which I think is downright silly!

The Andoni Iraola era began in underwhelming fashion, as Liverpool could only salvage a 2-2 stalemate against Newcastle yesterday.

The Magpies took a fifth-minute lead following a defensive mistake. Ryan Gravenberch turned over possession on the edge of the Reds box, allowing a Newcastle player to intercept the ball and slip a pass through to his teammate, who drove a firm strike across Alisson Becker into the back of the net. 

In the 54th minute, Cody Gakpo found space inside the box and slotted home the equalizer for Liverpool. 

But, just two minutes later, a Magpie substitute scored immediately after coming off the bench to restore their 2-1 lead. 

Thankfully, the Reds were awarded a late penalty following a foul on sub Victor Muñoz, which Dominik Szoboszlai converted deep into stoppage time to secure the draw.

UK Higher Ed: Prestige at a Discount

The competition is heating up and getting fiercer as UK higher education desperately fights to hold onto crashing foreign student enrollment. 

At least 22 universities are offering guaranteed tuition-fee discounts of up to £8,000 for overseas students. This shift is driven by a 17 percent drop in postgraduate enrollment in the two years leading to March 2026, stricter visa rules, and a 2024 ban on family members accompanying students. 

The reduced net fee at these varsities is likely to fuel concerns about the education sector's approach to recruiting overseas students, on whose fees it already depends.

The University of Nottingham, which set out plans to trim more than 600 jobs, offers an immediate £3,000 scholarship for 2026 taught master’s courses with no application needed, replacing merit awards. 

Meanwhile, the University of Aberdeen, where 100 jobs could be cut as part of a £10m savings plan, introduced an £8,000 scholarship directly deducted from the tuition bill. 

Furthermore, the University of Kent are offering a pre-approved £5,000 discount for master's degree entrants from 14 specific countries – including China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, and Vietnam – requiring no separate application process. 

The University of Leeds are also providing a hassle-free £5,000 regional scholarship reduction directly to eligible international undergraduate students, such as applicants from Kenya. 

Zeenat Fayaz, founder of The Brand Education, which advises universities on branding, said this “pricing war” could backfire by sparking competition between institutions on the basis of a degree’s cost rather than their own strengths. 

“Higher-tariff universities are not only offering scholarships, but they’re also reducing their grade requirements to allow students in... It’s a race to the bottom”.

Inside the Ismail Sabri Probe

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) have ensnared former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a multi-million rinngit corruption and money laundering investigation. 

Following the initial crackdown in February 2025, authorities instituted synchronized raids on seven locations: four private residences of senior aides and three separate safe houses, following the arrest of the quartet of senior officers who served under Ismail during his tenure as the ninth prime minister (August 21, 2021-November 24, 2022). 

They hauled away RM14,772,150 in Malaysian currency; S$6,132,350; US$1,461,400; CHF3 million; €12,164,150; ¥363,000,000; £50,250; NZ$44,600; AED34,750,000; and A$352,850, as well as 16kg of gold bars (worth nearly RM7 million), and secondary luxury assets.

The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court subsequently forfeited the cash to the government after the application went uncontested by all parties. Note that the forfeiture order applied only to the cash; the gold bullion, alongside a hoard of fine jewelry and high-value watches seized during the safe house raids, remain held as evidence for Ismail's criminal prosecution. 

Ismail Sabri (right) was scheduled to be officially charged in court on August 07, 2026, but the hearing has since been postponed to August 27 after he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for a pacemaker procedure. 

As the legal net tightens around yet another former prime minister, the staggering discovery of hidden safe houses, gold bullion, and millions in foreign cash serves as a sobering reminder of Malaysia's never-ending battle against high-level corruption. 

All eyes will be on the courts to see how this high-stakes political drama unfolds.

Holy Mockery

Death rituals seem to be a source of inspiration during the Malaysian election season.

Now, Anthony Loke has become the subject of a tahlil by UMNO members, allegedly to mock the DAP secretary-general’s "demise" in the Negeri Sembilan polls after he failed to defend his Chennah seat. 

DAP leader Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali condemned UMNO Youth exco Wan Zuhir Wan Ghazali for posting a video of the tahlil – a prayer gathering for the deceased – that the latter took part in, with the caption: "Doing tahlil for Loke's burial in Chennah. Condolences". 

Calling the move “irresponsible”, Sheikh Umar stressed that religious ceremonies should not be exploited as "material for mockery, insinuation, or a political weapon". 

Wan Zuhir (left), however, denied he had insulted the sanctity of the religion, insisting that since the Islamic matters he mentioned were not part of the teaching’s fundamental principles, he did not disrespect Islam.
