Unitree G1 Humanoid Robot Becomes a Luxury Collector's Piece

Luxury brand Caviar has officially unveiled the Aladdin, a high-end reimagining of the Unitree G1 platform that marks the birth of the world’s first luxury humanoid robot.

Moving beyond the utilitarian aesthetic of industrial machinery, this concept transforms a high-tech chassis into a private collector’s piece!

The project aims to bridge the gap between advanced engineering and fine art, turning a functional machine into a symbol of status and sophisticated design.

“It serves as a metaphor for a fairy tale hero of the digital age, where artificial intelligence has taken the place of magic”, said Caviar. The robot utilizes the Unitree G1 humanoid platform for its mechanical foundation. It stands 130 cm tall and weighs approximately 35 kg. With 23 degrees of freedom, the unit is capable of fluid movement and complex gestures, supported by balance algorithms that allow it to navigate different environments.

The project's appearance is based on the stories of "One Thousand and One Nights". Designers used arabesque patterns and precious stones to decorate the robot’s exterior. By applying these traditional motifs to a modern chassis, Caviar aims to create a visual link between ancient cultural traditions and contemporary artificial intelligence.

In fact, the name "Aladdin" was chosen to connect the technology to Eastern legends. In this context, the robot, it is said, serves as a physical representation of the "spirit" or genie found in folk tales. This concept explores the idea of human knowledge and engineering taking a tangible, mythic form through modern hardware.

Meet Mirumi

If you think everyone's favorite toy Labubu is charming comeliness, then you must also meet Mirumi!

I'll even admit, after watching the video below, that Mirumi has become the #1 thing on my wishlist.

The palm-sized Mirumi from Yukai Engineering looks like a friendly Yeti, who bashfully clings onto your arm, bag, or wherever you decide to place it.

Mirumi has been described as a "communication creature". When someone walks by – or you jostle it – it swivels its big googly eyes toward the source of motion. If you reach out to touch it? It hides. Or shakes its head "no".

Or does nothing. Because it's shy. And maybe a little moody.

The Tokyo, Japan-based robotics start-up's CEO Shunsuke Aoki (right) shares: “People often find great joy in sharing their own happiness with others. Mirumi is a robot that enables you to do just that. Whether you’re riding a crowded train or standing in line at the cashier, your Mirumi will always find a way to reach into people’s hearts with its innocent gaze, prompting the person to wave at the robot or make a funny face in response".

Even better, methinks the said robot can even serve as an excellent emotional support plaything.

The idea for Mirumi was born out of Yukai Engineering’s internal Make-a-Thon in 2024, during which a team of staff engineers and designers proposed to create a robotic “yokai” (supernatural being) like creature with the characteristics of a human baby.

The company plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign for the product in mid-2025.

Between you and me, I love the idea of a fuzzy toy that can interact with you when you're out in public. And there's nothing wrong in recognizing that I'll need Mirumi's level of cuteness in my daily life.

Bloodied John Wick Pop

When it comes to modern action franchises, none are as beloved as John Wick, i.e. actor Keanu Reeves (left).

Since 2014, the Keanu Reeves-led franchise has redefined the genre and is about to get its next major spin-off in Ballerina this summer.

Now, before Reeves suits back up in the role, Funko has unveiled their latest John Wick Pop.

The new John Wick figure sees the not-so-retired assassin in the middle of battle. He's particularly battle-damaged at the moment and bleeding in multiple places. However, he’s always ready to make the next deadly move with two blades at his disposal.

Reeves never gets out of the fray without a few scratches or two, but he's always the last one left standing.

The Pop figure now joins the pair of John Wick: Chapter 4 figures Funko released last year.

While John Wick: Chapter 4 felt like a definitive end to the franchise, Ballerina gives a narrative reason for the famous assassin’s return.

Taking place between Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4, the spin-off follows a female assassin played by No Time To Die’s Ana de Armas who's out for some classic revenge against the people who killed her family. John Wick will just be a side character in the film, but he's not the only major actor returning for the action-thriller. Both Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick are returning to their respective roles as Winston and Charon.

It's going to be exciting to see how well Ballerina does financially off the massive success of Chapter 4. That sequel was the highest grossing in the franchise to date, making over $440 million worldwide. It also was the highest reviewed film with a certified-fresh 94% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

FYI, Ballerina will be exploding into theaters on June 06, 2025.

Hello Kitty Turns 50

On Friday, the “CEO of supercute”, Hello Kitty celebrated her 50th birthday.

The cat-like character became popular in the 1970s and has remained a global phenomenon ever since, popular with adults, children, and celebrities alike. Even at 50, the character continues to be loved by many, adorning lines of merchandise from clothing to stationery and makeup, as well as appearing in animated series and films, comics, video games and books.

Sanrio, the Japanese company that own the character, make almost $4 billion in Hello Kitty sales annually, according to the Economist. It is estimated she has earned her creators $80 billion over her lifetime.

And according to the Guardian, the character is ranked as the second-highest grossing media franchise in the world behind Pokémon and ahead of Mickey Mouse and Star Wars.

Celebrities love her too: Paris Hilton was photographed carrying a diamante-encrusted Hello Kitty handbag, Katy Perry wore a corset with her face plastered on it at the 2009 Brit Awards, and Lady Gaga wore a gown made of Hello Kitty plushies that same year.

If you don't already know, Hello Kitty is now also a TikTok superstar, with more than 3.5 million followers on her account and 27.9 million likes.

Yesterday, Liverpool had to come from behind to secure a decisive 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at a rocking Anfield and go two points clear at the top of the Premier League on the day their two title rivals both suffered defeat. Yes, Newcastle and AFC Bournemouth beat Arsenal 1-0 and Manchester City 2-1 respectively.

Mohamed Salah went to the rescue, firing the winner for the Reds with his trademark curling shot from the right in the 72nd minute after Cody Gakpo had cancelled out the Seagulls' opener two minutes earlier.

A convincing show of clinical attacking play on Saturday saw six-goal Celtic booking a pl ace in the Scottish League Cup final and ending Aberdeen's unbeaten start to the season in devastating fashion.

Cameron Carter-Vickers opened the scoring when he thumped in Arne Engels' corner in the twenty-ninth minute. Kyogo Furuhashi doubled their lead three minutes later after a brilliant piece of play from Daizen Maeda, laying the ball to him to smash in off the bar. The provider then turned scorer in the fortieth minute as Nicholas Kuhn sublimely slipped him the ball.

The Dons staged a two-goal comeback at Celtic Park a fortnight ago, but there was no chance of a revival at Hampden when Maeda knocked in a back-post rebound in the 49th minute before Nicolas Kuhn hammered in a goal his display merited in the 59th minute. And again, Maeda had his third and Celtic's sixth when he tapped home Alistair Johnston's ball across the face of goal with five minutes left.

Sharks off Brazil Coast Test Positive for Cocaine

Thirteen Brazilian sharpnose sharks (Scientific name: Rhizoprionodon lalandii) caught off Rio de Janeiro have tested positive for cocaine, marine biologists who carried out the tests have reported.

High concentrations of cocaine were found in the sharks’ muscles and livers by researchers at the Rio de Janeiro-based Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. Benzoylecgonine was also detected in the same sharks. Benzoylecgonine is one of the byproducts produced when cocaine is consumed.

The 13 sharks were three males and 10 females, five of which were pregnant. All the sharks were captured from fishing boats off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro from September 2021 to August last year.

Samples were taken from the sharks, and the concentration of cocaine was found to be more than 100 times those previously reported in any other aquatic animals, according to the study.

Although further research is needed, the study suggests this is mostly down to more people using cocaine. A rise in cocaine use in the region, coupled with an inadequate drainage system, has caused higher quantities of cocaine to be present in seawater.

The study states: “Global COC [cocaine] consumption has increased exponentially in the last decades, as highlighted in the United Nations World Drug Report. About 22% (4.8 million) of the estimated 22 million COC users worldwide reside in South America as of 2021, with Brazil emerging as the second largest consumer market in this area”.

The study added that sewage analysis covering 60 million people in 37 countries from 2011 to 2017 had consistently revealed the presence of cocaine in aquatic environments.

Experts warn of potential health effects on sharks, such as impaired vision affecting hunting abilities, but no evidence yet of altered behavior due to cocaine exposure.

The cat’s out of the bag.

On the 50th anniversary of Hello Kitty, fans were shocked to learn that their beloved cat-inspired character is, in fact, not a feline at all.

“Hello Kitty is not a cat”, Jill Koch, the senior vice president of marketing and brand management at Sanrio, the creators of the iconic cartoon, told Today. “She’s actually a little girl”.

In fact, she’s a tiny girl – who “weighs three apples” and stands five apples tall – raised in the London suburbs with her twin sister Mimmy, their parents and even her own pet cat.

But fans of the widely celebrated character are not so convinced of this fact, while some were gobsmacked that Hello Kitty resided in the UK.

“She has cat ears and whiskers???” one dismayed user wrote on TikTok.

“If she has ears like a cat, has whiskers like a cat, she is probably just a little girl”, quipped another.

“So she has whiskers, ears, and is named ‘Kitty,’ but is actually human? What?” an aghast viewer commented.

“She’s British?!” someone else said.

According to anthropologist and author Christine R Yano, “The Japanese and Japanese women were into Britain” at the time of Hello Kitty’s conception, she previously told the Los Angeles Times.

“They loved the idea of Britain. It represented the quintessential idealized childhood, almost like a white picket fence. So, the biography was created exactly for the tastes of that time”, she explained, adding that Hello Kitty is, in fact, “a little girl”.

Whatever lah! Anyway, we can expect a slew of festivities and plentiful memorabilia to celebrate this year!

Hotdogs Playing Foosball

In the US, Pablo Rochat, a creative prankster in San Francisco, California hilariously played a lively game of foosball with skewered hotdogs cooking over a grill and a football made out of aluminum foil:

This fun activity aside, in New Zealand, you'll find Human Foosball! It is brought to you by Velocity Karts, the outdoor activity organizer located at Bexley Reserve, Pages Road in Christchurch.

Human foosball is the life-size version of table football, only YOU kick the ball! Each player is attached to a pole and just like the toys in the table game, players can only move side to side within their specific zones!

Sigh! These days, optimists are hard to find!

The Secret of the Claw Machine

In arcades, claw machines are crowd magnets. And understandably so.

Most people have a soft spot for adorable plushies perched in well-lit boxes, just begging to be taken home like this one kid who decided to crawl into a claw machine to take matters into his own hands. Many also love the thrill of knowing that the toy of their choice could fall into their hands (or out of it) with one skillful move.

But whenever it seems like the prize is sitting precariously close to the exit chute  just one solid grab away from being yours forever the claw drops the damn toy. This happens again and again, until you’re out of patience or out of coins, or both.

In a TikTok video, Katie Clark @clarkatie who bought a used claw machine found the operating manual inside. It indicated that there's a DIP switch that can be set to change how frequently the claws actually work. It can be set to allow a player to win every time, or as little as one out of fifty times. The default setting is one out of ten times.

Here's what the instruction page looks like:

I found an April 21, 2021 Vice report by Koh Ewe that claimed that claw machines are “100% rigged”, with experts explaining that business owners can manipulate the game to only produce a toy every-so-many tries.

“Hell yeah!” affirmed Umehara Keiji, a Singapore-based content creator who documents his frequent trips to the arcade on his YouTube channel. “Claw machines are 100% rigged in the arcades”.

To be clear, we’re defining “rigged” as claw machines having certain features that make it intentionally harder for players to win.

"Owners can vary the claw strength for when the claw goes up, down, or back above the chute. This makes people feel like they’re on the verge of winning when the toy is close to the chute. But of course, the claw strength would be 'crap at that moment'. That is the dark truth about claw machines”, Umehara who calls himself the Arcade Ninja added.

Meanwhile, another Singapore-based toy catcher known as Claw Coach pointed out another insidious function of claw machines – predetermined win rates or “payouts”. Meaning, they are meant to be programmed such that the cost price of the prizes are fulfilled before issuing a payout, he explained.

Rey Chua, an events manager at a Singapore-based claw machine rental company, told VICE that while there are different types of claw machines, they all pretty much work the same way.

“Whereby the claw only [catches] tightly part of the time and not all the time”, he said. “There [is] some element of skill and luck involved". He added that the difficulty of winning a prize would depend on the requirements of their renters.

Still, Umehara gave the best advice. “If you want to play with the claw machine, just play to have fun. Go in with the mindset of ‘Hey, [even] if I lose, I had fun’”.

The Farthest Star Ever Detected

Photo: NASA, ESA, CSA, D Coe (STScI/AURA for ESA; Johns Hopkins University), B Welch (NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center; University of Maryland, College Park). Image processing: Z Levay.

Above is a new image of Earendel, the farthest star ever detected, as captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.

Located approximately 28 billion light-years away from us, Earendel is "more than twice as hot as our Sun, and about a million times more luminous", according to NASA.

Rare Apple Trainers with Vintage Rainbow Logo

An ultra-rare pair of Apple branded trainers have gone up for sale for a whopping $50,000 (£38,722). The shoes were custom-made for company employees in the 1990s and given away at a sales conference.

They feature the vintage rainbow Apple logo, which was adopted in 1977 to celebrate the launch of the firm's first computer that supported colors and remained until 1999.

Auctioneer Sotheby's describe the sneakers – made by Omega Sports – as among "the most obscure in existence".

They are "highly coveted" on the resale market, having never reached the public, they add. The asking price comfortably tops Apple's existing products, from their cheapest iPhone to most expensive Mac. They do, at least, come with a spare pair of fetching red laces and are in their original box.

"The shoes' condition is consistent with age", says the listing. "Imperfections include yellowing around the midsoles and glue, and light marks on the toe boxes".

Should you be tempted, you'd better be sure you want them, as they are not eligible for return.

While expensive, the trainers don't come close to the $190,372.80 price fetched by an original iPhone at a recent US auction.

The first generation 4GB model was first released back in 2007 by the then Apple CEO Steve Jobs and retailed at a starting price of $499, but was discontinued just two months later amid disappointing sales figures.

Fake Boobs

Fake boobs have come a long way.

I didn't know this but today, I've learned that breast implants last on average anywhere between 10 to 20 years, with some women having their implants beyond 20 years.

It’s important to note that breast implants do not come with an expiration date or a shelf life. The FDA do not consider breast implants to be lifetime devices. However, there’s anecdotal evidence of women keeping their implants longer than 25 years. Implants can last indefinitely if the patient is still satisfied.

And a mortician who has made it his mission to normalise discussing death has revealed what happens to a woman's breast implants after she dies.

Gerald Dubya, known as @big_led73 on TikTok, is regularly sent questions about the human body after death and how an autopsy is carried out by his 2.2 million followers.

His latest video, six days ago, Dubya answered: "If a female has breast implants, are they removed or will the body decompose, becoming a skeleton with fake boobs?" He confirmed if "they're yours" then "you're taking them to the grave" – and your body will decompose around them.

He added: "They're not removed. If you're embalmed, the embalming fluid will preserve the tissue and slow down the decomposing process. Or if you're not embalmed, you're going to decompose super fast. The boobs will still be there. They're not going to decompose".

So, now I know!

When it came to boob jobs, Pamela Anderson was something of a pioneer. After finding fame as a Playboy pinup in 1990 and being chosen as Playmate of the Month, the blonde bombshell got breast implants and increased her bust to a 34D.

In 1999, the Baywatch bombshell decided to nix her big bosom for a more natural look – and making headlines across the globe with her restored C cup. Her implants were so famous that Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not Museum wanted to buy the implants and display them.

It didn't take too long before she made an about-turn in 2004 and returned to her signature look when she had her breasts augmented again, going to a 34DD!

And here's an interesting take on fake boobs from Sarah Silverman, American stand-up comedian, actress, and writer: “I think fake boobs have done great things for real boobs. I think people finally appreciate real boobs. People like real boobs. I do. I also enjoy the fact that they are life-nourishers”.

The Little Plastic Clasps Called Occlupanids

I’m sure you’ve seen those little plastic clasps (left)

Now, read the Holotypic Occlupanid Research Group’s intriguing description of the said objects – they label them “occlupanids” – and it is written in scientific prose:

“Occlupanids are generally found as parasitoids on bagged pastries in supermarkets, hardware stores, and other large commercial establishments. Their fascinating and complex life cycle is unfortunately severely under-researched. What is known is that they take nourishment from the plastic sacs that surround the bagged product, not the product itself, as was previously thought. Notable exceptions to this habit are those living off rubber bands and on analog watch hands.

In most species, they often situate themselves toward the center of the plastic bag, holding in the contents. This leads to speculation that the relationship may be more symbiotic than purely parasitic”.

HORG have even created a taxonomic rank as follows:
  • Kingdom – Microsynthera
  • Phylum – Plasticae
  • Class – Occlupanida (Occlu = to close, pan = bread)
  • Known Orders

“Where you find occlupanids, there shall you shall find civilization”. Actually, when you come to think of it, it does seem a valid statement, is it not?

A 12-Year-Old's Roach Obsession

Meet Shelby Counterman (right) – she’s a 12-year-old from Tulsa, Oklahoma in the US and she collects cockroaches.

She started with only five and now, her collection is made up of about 5,000 roaches, and which includes 17 different species. She likes them close and so, she keeps them in tanks in her bedroom.

She confesses her favorite is the Simandoa cave roach (Scientific name: Simandoa conserfariam), a species of cockroach that is believed to be extinct in the wild. However, it is kept as a pet by insect hobbyists and is therefore not considered completely extinct.

In the video, two species are featured – the Dubia roach (Scientific name: Blaptica dubia), a tropical species of cockroach originally native to South and Central America and the Madagascar hissing cockroach (Scientific name: Gromphadorhina portentosa), a wingless cockroach from Madagascar, off the coast of Africa.

Shelby knows that most people don’t understand her passion. “When someone says they’re gross, I explain that there are 4,500 roach species in the world and only a handful of them are bad for humans”, she says. “I want people to understand that roaches actually help us and play an important role in our ecosystem. They are decomposers. They eat garbage and other waste. They have a job to do”.

FYI, just 30 cockroach species are considered pests.

Penis Misadventures

I thought this article that I saw in Boing Boing today was bizarre and even funny, therefore, I’m sharing it here!

Here's a list of bad things that happened last year to those endowed with penises, as reported to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and compiled by Defector.

Excerpt:
  • Playing with a toy dinosaur and made it bite his penis
  • Was having a pillow fight with his dog when the dog lunged for the pillow and accidentally bit patient in his penis
  • Had a piercing on penis which got caught in car door
  • Took some male enhancement pill and used a penis pump, heard a "pop from a vein in his groin area"
  • Closed an eyeglass case on his penis
  • Pain to testicles which started when he was given oral sex after he was sprayed in the eyes with pepper spray
  • Stuck two magnets on his foreskin unable to remove

Eyebombing Fun

This holiday season, you should get yourself a pack of googly eyes and eyebomb your city – it will help you see public space in new ways, and help spread a little humor to your fellow humans.

Medium published a piece exploring the history of eyebombing, which they trace to a French artist in the late 1980s: “The earliest example of eyebombing as a larger movement comes from a French artist in the late 80s. Domininique Benracassa's project, "Ca Vous Regarde", which translates to either ‘It is In Your Interest’ or ‘It's Up To You’ depending on the contextual information around it, is described on the artist's website as an urban intervention installation project”.

But eyebombing really exploded a little over a decade ago thanks to Danish duo Kim Nielson and Peter Dam, who have eyebombed Copenhagen (and other cities) and who started a Tumblr to share their work. They specifically saw eyebombing as a way to anthropomorphize everyday objects, enhance public spaces, and bring humor to folks wandering through those spaces.

Their rules included:

  1. Only images of inanimate objects with wiggle eyes – NOT stickers.
  2. Only images taken in the public space.
  3. No eyes on eyes.

Here's a cool video by the BBC exploring their work:

A Collector of Wheelies

I thought I was an oddball because once upon a time, I collected restaurant menus and swizzle sticks. But for Alexander Smoljanovic, it’s all about bins.

You could say he’s obssesed with wheelies. The German national has over 100 full-size wheelie bins lined up in his garden at home, but the one he really wants for his collection is only available in the UK.

The bin enthusiast wants the rare purple Sulo 240-litre bin so much he contacted a local newspaper in Buckinghamshire, UK – the county that gave birth to his passion when he lived there 15 years ago.

He told the Bucks Free Press: “I have miniatures and real wheelie bins from USA, Australia, France, UK, and Germany. Almost every color is available. The most valuable colors are purple, gold, silver, and transparent. Every time I’m searching for special wheelie bins, I’ll contact the local newspaper. I’ve had over 80 articles now and every time was very successful with my search”.

The avid collector is prepared to offer money to get his desired bin – but people often donate them for free! They are bins after all!

There are a few purple Sulo bins in circulation. The one from 2010 is much lighter, and the older 2002 version is a darker shade of purple that the bin buff says is ‘beautiful’.

If you have a purple Sulo that could do with a new home, kindly contact webnews@metro.co.uk and they’ll pass the message on.

A Distant Star That Is A Slice Of Pork Sausage

Not everything you read is true! Even if it comes from an authoritative source!

World renowned French scientist Étienne Klein (right) tweeted this on July 31, 2022:

“Photo de Proxima du Centaure, l’étoile la plus proche du Soleil, située à 4,2 année-lumière de nous. Elle a été prise par le JWST. Ce niveau de détails… Un nouveau monde se dévoile jour après jour”.

[Translation: "Photo of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun, located 4.2 light years from us. It was taken by the JWST (James Webb Space Telescope). This level of detail… A new world is revealed day after day"].

His tweet was accompanied by this picture:

Actually, it was a photo of a slice of chorizo against a black background!

Yet, many people believed Klein because he is the director of research at the Atomic Energy Commission. Klien soon cleared up the confusion – and admitted it was all a joke!

From HuffPost France (machine translated): "According to contemporary cosmology, no object relating to Spanish charcuterie exists elsewhere than on Earth", he wrote before adding: "I feel obliged to specify that this tweet showing an alleged snapshot of Proxima du Centaur was a form of amusement. Let us learn to distrust arguments from authority as much as the spontaneous eloquence of certain images…".

Contacted by The HuffPost, Etienne Klein explains that his tweets had above all an educational aim. "This is the first time I've made a joke when I'm more on this network as a figure of scientific authority. The good news is that some immediately understood the deception but it also took two tweets to clarify. It also illustrates the fact that on this type of social network, fake news is always more successful than real news. I also think that if I hadn't said it was a photo of James Webb, it wouldn't have been so successful", he explains.
