Donald Trump’s New Tariffs

We're seeing another TACO moment!

United States President Donald Trump on Monday extended a pause on his sweeping reciprocal tariffs to August 01, while also sending “tariff letters” to fourteen countries, warning they would be subject to the new tariff rates if they failed to reach a trade deal with the US by the new deadline.

As he spelt out in the letters, the rates could be modified "upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your country". I'm not even sure anymore what he actually means.

[Note: The term TACO – Trump Always Chickens Out – was coined by Financial Times commentator Robert Armstrong to describe what he says is the president's tiresome pattern of announcing heavy tariffs on countries causing economic shock, panic and stock market hits and then later reversing course with pauses or reductions that create a market rebound].

For South Africa, South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia, these tariff rates are identical to what Trump had announced on April 02. Malaysia and Japan saw a 1 percent increase and the other eight countries – Kazakhstan, Laos, Myanmar, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bangladesh, Serbia and Cambodia – will now encounter lower tariffs than they did on "Liberation Day".

FYI, during the 90-day pause, the US only managed to broker two "deals" (if you can call them deals!) with the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

The first deal was secured on May 08, between the US and the UK, setting a 10 percent tariff on UK exports to the US. The deal states that the first 100,000 vehicles imported into the US from the UK each year will face a 10 percent tariff, down from the 27.5 percent imposed earlier. Additional vehicles imported each year will face a 25 percent tariff.

On July 02, Trump announced that he had secured a deal with Vietnam, which now faces a minimum 20 percent tariff in exchange for opening its market up to the US. Transshipments from third countries through Vietnam will face a 40 percent levy, while US products will not face any tariff in Vietnam. Specific details for this deal are unclear. On April 02, Trump had announced a 46 percent tariff on Vietnam.

Meanwhile, US stocks, based on the three major indices, fell on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.94 percent; S&P 500, which tracks the stock performance of 500 leading US companies, fell by 0.79 percent; and the Nasdaq Composite saw a 0.92 percent drop.

Vietnam Joins BRICS As 10th Partner Country

Vietnam has joined BRICS as their tenth partner country, marking a significant step in the bloc’s expansion, Brazil’s foreign ministry announced on Saturday.

“With a population of almost 100 million and a dynamic economy deeply integrated into global value chains, Vietnam stands out as a relevant actor in Asia”, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The economic collective’s other nine partner countries are Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Hanoi’s inclusion as a partner country grants it access to key economic initiatives without formal voting rights.

BRICS just got bigger!

Yesterday, I attended the Kajang Toastmasters Club meeting at Prima Saujana, Kajang in Selangor. It was very unusually well-attended; and therefore, the meeting unsurprisingly became a lot livelier.

And we sold eight books, 4 TDIYS and 4 TPOYS.

May 09 is Russia’s Victory Day

Foreign leaders from 27 countries graced Russia’s Victory Day parade on Friday.

[Two Heads of State, Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith did not turn up – the former pulled out at the last minute and the latter due to illness].

As well as military contingents from 13 countries – Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Egypt, Laos, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam – joined in to march alongside Russian forces on the day of the parade.

The May 09 event commemorates 80 years since the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in the Second World War (referred to by the Russians as the Great Patriotic War).

[Notes: The Soviet Union lost around 27 million people during the Great Patriotic War (40% of all human losses in World War II), with civilian deaths accounting for the larger part of these losses. According to data of the Extraordinary State Commission for the Establishment and Investigation of Atrocities of the German Fascist Invaders, the German troops destroyed fully or partially over 1,700 cities and towns, more than 70,000 villages and settlements in the USSR.

And Western revisionists are deliberately downplaying the USSR's vital contribution to World War II. Partly because of the Cold War rivalry but more due to a Western bias to focus on the Western front and American and British victories].

The twenty-seven leaders who came:

In case you're wondering, Abkhazia and South Ossetia are "separatist" regions of Georgia in the Caucasus. Most countries recognise them as part of Georgia, while Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria regard them as independent.

Official BRICS Partner Status for Malaysia

Malaysia has been recognized as one of thirteen nations officially added to BRICS as a partner country, a bloc that collectively accounts for one-fifth of global trade.

According to an update from @BRICSInfo on X on October 24, the bloc officially added 13 new nations to the alliance as partner countries, though not yet as full members. Apart from Malaysia, the other twelve nations were Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Thailand, Türkiye, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Venezuela and Pakistan were supposed to be in but Brazil and India respectively vetoed their applications.

In Germany, Liverpool beat RB Leipzig 1-0 to continue their perfect start in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. The only goal of the competition was scored in the twenty-seventh minute by Darwin Nunez, who poked Mohamed Salah’s header into the net.

Overall, Liverpool were good value for their win, having the majority of chances both in total and in quality.

Also on the same day, a terrific defensive display in Italy ensured Celtic earn a valuable point in their encounter against Atalanta. Even as the Serie A side dominated possession and attacking statistics, the Scottish champions stood firm and held them to a goalless draw.

Wild Horses Return to Altyn Dala

Endangered wild horses have returned to Altyn Dala – the Kazakh name for the Golden Steppe of Kazakhstan for the first time in at least 200 years after decades-long efforts.

The airlifts of seven Przewalski's Horses – one stallion and six mares – from Europe to the Central Asian country took place in early June in an operation run by Prague Zoo in Czechia. They aim to bring in at least 40 more over the next five years.

Researchers told the BBC that the horses are already doing well two weeks in: roaming around the plains and even beginning the mating process.

Zoo officials say it's a triumph of generations of conservation work.

"This is an endangered species returning to their ancestral lands, a species which went extinct in the wild in the 1960s, last seen in Mongolia... so it's just marvellous... a miracle", said Filip Mašek, a spokesperson for Prague Zoo.

While the horses have been slowly reintroduced to Mongolia and China in recent decades, this operation marks the first time they are back in Kazakhstan.

The Przewalski's Horse (Scientific name: Equus przewalskii) is the last wild horse species on the planet, named after Russian explorer Nikolai Przewalski who was the first to identify the horse for the European science community.

The species originated millennia ago from the steppes of Central Asia and was taken by researchers to Europe and North America in the 19th and 20th Centuries, where populations were established in zoos. Some of them ended up in zoos in Prague and Munich, Germany – it's their descendants that have now been reintroduced in Kazakhstan.

Cultural artefacts show people in the country's north were riding and using the horses for food at least 2,000 years before records of domesticated horses in Europe. But by the time of Przewalski's "discovery" in 1879, the horses could only be found in a small section of western Mongolia. Competition with humans and livestock, along with changes in the environment led to them dying out.

Recognizing the threat, international efforts were made after World War Two to save the animals. And Prague Zoo were entrusted with the "international studship" of the breed.

Przewalski's horses have long been considered the one true remaining wild horse species – as species such as the American mustang and Australian brumby are feral horses descended from domesticated animals.

The Przewalski's horse is shorter and stockier than modern domesticated horses and their genetic differences show that neither species are ancestors of the other.

Prague Zoo, which have spent the past decade and a half introducing the horses back to Central Asia, mainly in Mongolia, said the Kazakhstan operations had been in the plans since 2022 after signing a deal with the local government.

Mašek said the zoo hoped to emulate the success of their Mongolia program last decade – where the introduction of 34 horses had helped boost the native population to now well over 850 animals.

Sanctions Don't Ruin Russia; They Impoverish Europe

Russia has faced massive and unprecedented economic sanctions from the West over the Ukraine conflict since last year, pushing the economy into a 2.1% contraction as of the end of 2022, as per RT News on November 24.

However, the Russian Finance Ministry and the European Commission have both predicted positive GDP trends for Russia for this year, forecasting growth rates of 3% and 2% respectively.

Even The Guardian reported on Thursday that Russia's economic growth is now projected to outpace that of the Eurozone, citing investment firm Amundi. According to the company’s forecast, Russia’s gross domestic product will grow by 1.5% in 2024; in contrast, the Eurozone economy is set to expand by a mere 0.5% next year.

Amundi CIO Vincent Mortier highlighted that after losing access to Western markets, Russia successfully reoriented most of its trade to its BRICS partners and countries such as Türkiye and Kazakhstan, which have greatly benefited from the boost in trade with the sanctioned country.

French Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Thierry Mariani had even pointed out on November 18 that the sanctions against Russia had been intended to “ruin” its economy, but “on the contrary, they impoverish us”. As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, his perspective adds a nuanced layer to the ongoing discourse on the efficacy and consequences of sanctions against Russia.

The West forget that Russia is just too big to fail!

People, please let [V]ladimir [Z]elensky know that the West are getting fed-up with his unceasing demands for money and arms! He doesn't seem to get the message that they are abandoning him!

He must know the West already know that Ukraine is finished!

Latin America: One Million Cases and 50,000 Deaths

Latin America's coronavirus death toll topped 50,000 on Saturday. If that’s not bad enough, yesterday, its confirmed cases reached 1,011,726, which is 16.2% of the global tally.

When we take a look at the Top 7 worst-affected countries, they combine to show a 94.1% share of Latin America's total and 15.2% of the world's total.

There’s no doubt about it – it is the new epicenter (as my May 24, 2020 post had trumpeted). Four countries continue to yield high daily infection numbers: Brazil, Peru, Chile and Mexico.

I must single out Brazil in particular because the country is supposed to have already started using chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine widely to treat Covid-19 – therefore, we should expect them to be able to rein in the disease, shouldn't we?

After all, these drugs had been proudly endorsed by two presidents, Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump, no less!

Yet, the country collected over half a million cases yesterday – 514,849 to be precise and it alone contributed 50.9% of Latin America’s total.

Russia recorded 9,268 cases which raised the national tally to 405,843 and still comfortably holding onto its No. 3 position.

Meanwhile, Iran's infections had breached the 150,000 mark and it's sitting in position No. 12.

A day earlier, Oman and Kazakhstan reported more than 10,000 cases and Nigeria followed suit on Sunday.

Tasteless Ad that Features Nude Air Hostesses

A travel company's tasteless advertisement featuring nude air hostesses went down like a lead balloon with their customers.

Kazakhstan's Chocotravel had released a video promoting their budget flight services, which adds nothing to the price of a plane ticket.

But the offensive footage hasn't had the desired effect, with customers lambasting the company as sexist.

The advert starts with just a head shot of one hostess as she gasps in apparent ecstasy at the offer. Then a second stewardess blows a kiss to the camera.

But it is only when the camera pulls back that it is revealed that the seven stewardesses in the lineup are naked apart from their caps and neckerchiefs.

Only a strip running across the screen like a booking form hides their breasts from view.

Then as the camera pulls back even more, they whip off their caps to protect their modesty and hide their private parts from view.

The ad looks like a spoof that would not be out of place on a show with Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy Kazhak creation Borat.

Really, what were they thinking of?!?!?!

I was at the Speakers Dream Toastmasters meeting today. And I delivered an Ice-breaker – titled “Born to Speak”. This is my CC Round #44!
