WSC's Forty-sixth Meeting

The forty-sixth meeting of World Speakers' Coalition Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday saw us returning to MidValley Megamall, specifically at The Barn.

There were seven of us ‒ and all are members. Muhendaran was the October organizer and host.

Our meeting theme was "Where We Are Heading". With a topic like that, you have to forgive the speakers when they went in all directions! Still, they opened up and shared their personal encounters, engagements and experiences; each one a gem of a story. And yet, they all had this awareness that to find where you are going, you must know where you are!

But Lewis Carrol, the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) and its sequel "Through the Looking-Glass" (1871) did say "If you don't know where you're going, any road will do". And he's right too!

Compare this with Henry Kissinger's: "If you do not know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere".

😯😯😯

As for me, I posited that "I don't really care where I am heading, as long as it is somewhere"! 😁😁😁

Amazon Announce Mass Layoffs Amid AI Push

Amazon, on Tuesday, announced job cuts – 14,000 corporate jobs, representing a 4% reduction in their office workforce – and adding that they are not done with the layoffs! Reuters had claimed the day before that this number could ultimately reach 30,000.

Staff in the US, Canada, and Europe have been informed of the layoffs, according to internal Slack posts viewed by Business Insider.

The layoffs are the company's biggest since 2023, when 27,000 jobs were slashed globally.

This decision comes amid a wider trend where corporate giants eliminate tens of thousands of positions as they intensify automation. Meaning, AI is “enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before”. Data from tracker Layoffs.fyi indicates that nearly 113,000 tech employees were let go among 218 tech firms globally this year.

Already, since 2024, Amazon have committed about $40 billion to four data center projects in the US, as it builds up its infrastructure to try to compete with OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and others.

I get this impression that technology is being leveraged primarily to increase corporate profits and concentrate wealth.

Celtic narrowed the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to six points as interim manager Martin O'Neill delivered an emphatic 4-0 victory over Falkirk in his first game in charge in 20 years.

Johnny Kenny's first-half double (30, 40), followed by Benjamin Nygren (58) and Sebastian Tounekti (73) strikes, earned a comfortable win for a side who had suffered successive league defeats.

There's a long way to go for Celtic to be fully back on track but this was a really positive step that lifted the mood ahead of Sunday's League Cup semi-final against Rangers.

Over A Million Discuss Suicide With ChatGPT Weekly

OpenAI have announced a new safety update to their popular ChatGPT model after an internal analysis revealed over a million users are admitting to suicidal tendencies to the chatbot. The changes are meant to improve the AI’s ability to recognize and properly respond to distress.

In a statement on Monday, the company revealed that an estimated 0.15% of weekly ChatGPT users have engaged in conversations that include “explicit indicators of potential suicidal planning or intent”. Another 0.05% of messages are also said to have contained “explicit or implicit indicators of suicidal ideation or intent”.

Earlier this month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed that ChatGPT has more than 800 million weekly active users, meaning that, according to the company’s latest figures, over 1.2 million people have discussed suicide with the chatbot, and about 400,000 have displayed signs of suicidal intent.

The company also claimed that around 0.07% (560,000) of its weekly users and 0.01% (80,000) of messages indicate “possible signs of mental health emergencies related to psychosis or mania”. It further noted that a number of users have grown emotionally over reliant on ChatGPT, with about 0.15% (1.2 million) of active users exhibiting behavior that indicates “heightened levels” of emotional attachment to the chatbot.

OpenAI said they have partnered with dozens of mental health experts from around the world to update the chatbot so it can more reliably recognize signs of mental distress, provide better responses, and guide users to real-world help.

In conversations relating to delusional beliefs, the company said they are teaching ChatGPT to respond “safely”, and “empathetically”, while avoiding affirming ungrounded beliefs.

The company’s pronouncement comes amid rising concerns over the increasing use of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and the effect they have on people’s mental health. Psychiatrists and other medical professionals have expressed alarm about an emerging trend of users developing dangerous delusions and paranoid thoughts after prolonged conversations with AI chatbots, which tend to affirm and reinforce users’ beliefs. The phenomenon has been dubbed by some as “AI psychosis”.

Liverpool's head coach (right) got crazily desperate yesterday. He named three teenagers in his starting line-up and a further five among his substitutes as he made 10 changes from the team that was beaten 3-2 at Brentford on Saturday.

In short, he put together a team of under-utilised first-team squad players, fringe youngsters and Academy hopefuls. Unsurprisingly, Arne Slot's line-up gamble backfired badly and Crystal Palace very easily thumped his much-changed side 3-0. And Liverpool limped out of the League Cup last 16 ‒ and which represents their sixth defeat in seven games.

The Eagles have now beaten the English champions three times in three months ‒ having defeated Slot's side on penalties in the Community Shield in August and then won 2-1 in the league at Selhurst Park last month.

This time, the head coach has to take sole blame for the defeat.

Six-seven

I spied upon this Guardian article published on October 20 which tries to explain the latest expression 'Six-seven' that is widely used especially by teens and tweens.

And it has even travelled to Malaysia! I first heard about it when I was involved in a training program (September 27-28, 2025) which I had highlighted in my September 30 blog post "SAS Kelas 3 Maju". In fact, I was personally introduced to it by one of the students whom I had coached.

Name: Six-seven.

Age: Less than a year old.

Appearance: Everywhere.

What does six-seven signify? You know, just six-seven. Six-sevvuhnn!

Is it a code? No, it’s six-seven!

Is it a cool way to say someone is at sixes and sevens, i.e., in a state of disorder or confusion? It is definitely not that.

Then what does it mean? It’s just something the young people of today are saying. Or shouting.

You mean it’s fashionable to yell out two consecutive numbers? It’s more than fashionable – it’s a plague. Six-seven has become the bane of school teachers everywhere.

Why? Because it’s maddening. Imagine telling your students to turn to page 67, only for all of them to shout “six-seven!” at you.

No, I mean why are the children doing that? Even they don’t know why.

It must come from somewhere. Yes, but I should preface any explanation by saying: it’s a long story and it doesn’t matter.

I’ll be the judge of that. Fine. The phrase “six-seven”, in its modern sense, appears to originate with the Philadelphia, US rapper Skrilla’s 2024 track Doot Doot (6 7), in which it’s either a reference to police radio code, or 67th Street, or something else.

I see. But it really went viral when the song was repeatedly used to soundtrack video clips of the NBA basketball star LaMelo Ball, who is, as it happens, 6ft 7in.

OK, I think I get it. Trust me, you don’t. Somewhere along the line the phrase acquired an accompanying hand gesture: two upturned palms alternately rising and falling, like weighing scales.

In that case, perhaps it’s a reference to something being nothing special, i.e., a six or a seven on a scale from one to 10? Nice try, but no. The phrase has become such a phenomenon in the US that it was the basis for a South Park episode, in which it sparks a moral panic.

And it’s now reached the classrooms of the UK? Apparently it has. Thus ends the story of six-seven.

You were right. That was long, and it didn’t matter. Not in the least. It’s a bit of meme slang that refers only to itself, advertising nothing beyond the average 13-year-old’s capacity for being annoying and a corresponding willingness to flog a dead horse.

What can be done about it? Some teachers have banned it, but others have incorporated six-seven into their teaching.

I suppose it will be over soon enough. Adults are talking about it, so it already is.

Do say: “Open your textbooks to page 55, and then turn over 12 more pages”.

Don’t say: “Skibidi!”

And so, this so-called "cultural" phenomenon, which is, really, a form of nonsensical Internet slang for Gen Alpha, is often used in response to prompts involving the numbers six and seven. It does not have any specific meaning, and which leaves older generations confused!

7 Public Speaking Cheat Codes

This is self-explanatory. πŸ‘‡

Yesterday, Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager! The second time he walked away from the club. To me, it's obvious; he couldn't take the heat!

And Celtic's major shareholder Dermot Desmond issued a bombshell of a statement that was absolutely box office stuff. He accused Rodgers (left) of "divisive, misleading, and self-serving" behaviour.

Former boss Martin O'Neill will take over in the interim. I pray he can save Celtic's season.

Ikea Just Made a Tiny Bed for your Smartphone

Even your smartphone will want a good sleep!

In the United Arab Emirates, IKEA have announced the IKEA Phone Sleep Collection, a range of mini IKEA-style beds that come with a built-in NFC tag, meaning you can keep track of the sleep you're getting.

The bed is currently only available there and is free with a purchase of 750 UAE dirhams, which is equivalent to about $200. Of course, the app-driven bed is meant to encourage better sleep by discouraging phone use.

After seven nights of uninterrupted sleep for seven hours each, the user will earn a Dhs100 (roughly five Dollars) IKEA voucher ‒ but the real reward is the sleep itself.

The tiny bed sadly does not seem to have an equally adorable Swedish name, but it does not require an Allen wrench for assembly, so there is that.

Hearts showed they might just be title contenders as they stunned Celtic 3-1 on Sunday to move eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Dane Murray ‒ one of three youngsters in the Celtic XI ‒ slashed into his own net in the eighth minute to put Hearts ahead. The Glasgow side made amends when Callum McGregor's classy first goal of the season quickly cancelled out Hearts' opener four minutes later.

Still, the irrepressible Edinburgh side seized control again and scored two goals (52, 55 penalty) to consign Celtic to successive league defeats for the first time since 2023.

The Scottish champions are back at home on Wednesday against promoted side Falkirk.

Interview with Dr Ganchimeg Zagdaa

Ahmad Fakhri and Victor Ong, the authors of "The Diamond in Your Speech" (2022) and "The Pearls of Your Speech" (2025) had travelled to Mongolia with the intention of meeting up with Dr Ganchimeg Zagdaa (right). They wanted to interview her as part of their research for an upcoming third book (tentatively titled "The Rubycon in Your Speaking Journey).

FYI, this power woman is the President of Toastmasters Mongolia National Organization, World Speech Day Ambassador of Mongolia and Founder of the Academy of English in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

In case you're wondering, these are the criteria the two writers are looking for insofar as identifying the credible public speakers whom they wish to feature in the said book:

1. Extensive Experience ‒ Possesses 15–20+ years of consistent experience in public speaking across diverse platforms (corporate, community, international), demonstrating both versatility and longevity.

2. Thought Leadership ‒ Recognised as an author, trainer, mentor, and coach with published works, structured training programs, and a proven track record in developing other speakers.

3. Community Impact ‒ Has established or led impactful public speaking initiatives (e.g., Toastmasters and World Speech Day), or projects/campaigns that have nurtured a speaking culture within local communities.

4. Reputation for Integrity ‒  Widely respected within the public speaking and training ecosystem as a genuine, ethical, and approachable go-to person, known for uplifting others without ego.

5. Culture of Contribution ‒ Actively gives back through pro bono mentoring, public sharing, or educational outreach, reflecting a deep commitment to the lifelong learning of others.

6. Non-Commercial Legacy ‒ Has earned significant recognition, awards, or titles, yet remains purpose-driven, valuing influence and impact over profit or fame.

7. Consistent Growth & Relevance ‒ Continuously refines their craft by staying current with speaking trends, technologies (like virtual/hybrid speaking), and evolving audience needs.

And that opportunity came on October 15 when the Malaysian duo were at the Jolly Campus in Erdene, about 88km from Ulaanbaatar.

She already knew their questions. And her responses, sure and steady came fast and furious. As they listened and made notes, they knew she fits the bill.

She's No. 2 on their list after Singapore's Dr Ernest Chen. (Note: His interview was on October 06).

In fact, both these public speakers have clearly met all seven of the stated criteria. They are truly public speaking luminaries in every sense of the word.

After 3 hours, Ahmad and Victor got to know Ganchimeg Zagdaa. And you bet, they are eager to tell her story.

Public PWP @ TTS

We're back at The Thinking Space in Taman Melawati, KL on Saturday-Sunday where we conducted our very first public workshop, "Persuade with Power" for adults (not the usual cohorts of corporates and students). A mixed bag of fourteen people had signed up, including  an Indian national and an Indonesian national.

The speech showcase featured thirteen speakers:

Personally, I found this particular 2-day session to be very fulfilling!

BTW, we managed to sell eight and nine copies of TDIYS and TPOYS respectively. In fact, yesterday at 09:07 AM, the Pearls book even reached the 300-copy milestone; this tells us that on average, about 40 books were sold every month since it came out in mid-March.
