In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves across India, a 31-year-old woman was violently raped and brutally murdered, within the confines of the prestigious RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The victim was a postgraduate trainee doctor and was on night duty on Thursday night when the incident occurred. Her body was found on Friday morning at a seminar hall of the hospital.
The following day, a suspect identified by some media outlets as 35-year-old Sanjay Roy, a police volunteer was arrested in connection with the crime.
The incident sparked protests by doctors of the state-run hospital.
Taking cognizance of the situation, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that her government will seek a death penalty for the offender.
