Birkin Bags

Tenacious Serdang MP Teoh Nie Ching continues with her indefatigable quest to highlight Rosmah Mansor’s excesses – kindly check out her piece at webpage http://malaysia-today.net/mtcolumns/letterssurat/44334-no-ring-but-what-about-the-birkin-handbags, published October 22, 2011.

According to her, she had put forward a question during one Parliament sitting requesting confirmation whether there is any truth in the persistent rumor that Rosmah owns a diamond ring worth $24 million and a collection of Birkin handbags.

I had already reported that Rosmah herself had denied she owns the said ring (my blog posting dated August 02, 2011) and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz too echoed the same standpoint (my blog posting dated October 07, 2011) – although he did evade answering the other part of the question pertaining to the Birkin handbags.

Now, if Nazri had no wish to clarify the Birkin handbag question, does this mean that this particular rumor is true?

It is a known fact that Rosmah has appeared in public clutching her Birkin handbags. Going by the photos compiled by netizens, the number of Birkin handbags carried by her in official functions as well as when she is on holiday add up to not just one or two but at least eleven and in different colours too!

Manufactured by Hermès since 1984 and named after the British actress/singer Jane Birkin, a Birkin handbag is seen as a fashion classic, a symbol of indulgence and extravagance.

Due to its limited production, the price of a Birkin handbag ranges from $9,000 to $150,000. It is also true to claim that a Birkin bag is an 'investment' – an item that will remain in style for years. Certainly, the Birkin is proof of this, with waiting lists of up to three years, according to one newspaper report that I read.

Wouldn’t it be great if Rosmah can put to rest this rumor about her free-wheeling lifestyle by letting Malaysians in on her bag-collecting hobby? Just explain lah.

Did Rosmah buy them with her own money? Were they given to her as gifts? Are they in fact just imitations bought from Petaling Street vendors? I cannot wait to know the truth.

But methinks the bags are original. After all, Rosmah has class!

I also happen to think that Rosmah is trying to compete with Victoria Beckham (left) – who is also very well-known for her expensive taste in fashion – she reportedly owns 100 Hermès Birkin bags.

According to UK’s Daily Mail, website, Thebigmoney.com had been curious and they worked out Posh Spice's hoard of the coveted bag alone to be worth a massive £1.5 million (Webpage http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1184169/Bag-lady-Victoria-Beckhams-100-strong-Birkin-bag-collection-thats-worth-1-5m.html, published May 20, 2009).

So, poor Rosmah has a lot of catching up to do!
