Did you know that multi-Michelin starred chef and restauranteur and star of the small screen Gordon Ramsay (left) is Scottish? And that he was once an aspiring footballer?
Yes – he was born in Johnstone, Scotland but when he was five, his family moved to Stratford, England where he was raised.
He was scouted to play football by Glasgow-based Rangers and in 1985, the nineteen-year-old landed arguably the biggest opportunity in his entire career as a football player – the chance to partake in a game Rangers FC played against East Kilbride Thistle FC.
"A naturally aggressive left-back" and a "cut-throat tackler", Ramsay enjoyed some success until a knee injury cut short his professional football career in his home country after only three years and leaving him with no choice but to look for new opportunities.
That was when he opted to enrol in a hotel management course at the North Oxon Technical College in Banbury, England in 1987. The following year, he trained at Harveys under star chef Marco Pierre White and he also spent some time picking up new skills at Le Gavroche, one of the finest restaurants London's Mayfair have to offer.
Afterward, he went on to train under culinary masterminds like Guy Savoy, the chef who reportedly made him cry, and the late Joël Robuchon, who, as the story has it, threw a plate of langoustine ravioli at him.
In 1993, Ramsay became the head chef at Aubergine in Chelsea, London, and in 3 years, he won his first brace of Michelin stars and cemented his place as a culinary trailblazer. In 1998, he launched his own venture, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.
Rae Oliver in a blog post published January 04, 2022 wrote: "Known for his volatile kitchen demeanor and exceptional British cuisine, Gordon Ramsay is arguably the most famous chef in the world.
Although he’s been awarded 16 Michelin stars throughout his career, he currently holds seven. His signature restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London, has held 3 stars since 2001, making it London’s longest-running three Michelin-starred restaurant".

The no-nonsense chef Gordon Ramsay has made many TV appearances – some of his best-known TV shows include "Hell's Kitchen", "The F-Word", and the BAFTA-winning "Kitchen Nightmares" and of course, you’ll be acquainted with his famously fiery temper and his generous use of profanity!
