In the ASEAN Football Federation semi-final, first-leg tie at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil between Malaysia and Thailand yesterday, the former scored the only goal in the eleventh minute.
This came after defender Sharul Nazeem Zulpakar sent a raking pass to overlapping left-back V Ruventhiran to head into the path of nippy winger Faisal Halim to slot the ball past the onrushing Thai goalkeeper and put Malaysia in a strong position to qualify for the final.
There should have been a second goal – in the 55th minute – but the referee bizarrely disallowed Dominic Tan's header from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner of the goalmouth after Lee Tuck's long-range freekick.

Malaysia will next travel to Bangkok for the second leg at the Thammasat Stadium on Tuesday.
Also yesterday, Celtic overcame a difficult first half to beat Kilmarnock 2-0 and extend their Scottish Premiership lead to 12 points over Rangers.
In the forty-fifth minute, Jota slid in to meet Daizen Maeda's low cross to score his eighth goal of the season.
And Celtic doubled their lead in the fifty-first minute when a Kilmarnock defender deflected Reo Hatate's cross into his own goal under pressure from Kyogo Furuhashi.
Celtic had a glut of chances towards the end of the match – but none were converted. Never mind, Celtic got the three points and that's what mattered.
