Facebook Insult China's Xi Jinping

Facebook insulted Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It happened during the latter’s much-touted 2-day visit (January 17-18, 2020) to Myanmar – the first made by a Chinese leader in almost two decades – and the historic occasion was blighted by the automatic translation feature on Myanmar’s Facebook page!

It rendered Xi Jinping’s name from Burmese into English as “Mr Shithole”.

Now, that is abhorrent, repugnant and disrespectful.

The name gaffe most notably appeared on the official Facebook page of Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The offending examples:

"Mr Shithole, President of China arrives at 4 PM", said a translated announcement posted on Saturday.

"President of China, Mr. Shithole, signed a guest record of the house of representatives".

Facebook had since apologized.

The company spokesperson told AFP the social platform "has fixed the issue regarding Burmese to English translations" on their site.

Still, an insult is an insult.

FYI, both countries exchanged memoranda of understanding, letters and protocols covering 33 projects and in the process, buttressing bilateral relations and advancing Beijing's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, in which Myanmar is a key player.
