Stung by public unhappiness of police inaction, the police decided to be bold and brave. And so, at about 8:00 AM this morning, they swooped down on the historic square and promptly arrested two Occupy Dataran activists, Omar Mohd Azmi and Fahmi Reza. City Hall officials also seized their tents and other camping equipment. Omar is being investigated for obstructing a public official from discharging his duty (Section 186 of the Penal Code) and Fahmi under a DBKL by-law. This is farcical, isn’t it? Welcome to Malaysia under the BN regime!

Another farce is being played out in Bahrain where Formula One cars raced in spite of the continuing political unrest in that country. The FIA decision to allow Bahrain to host the World Championship this year is akin to thumbing its nose at human rights and insulting the country’s courageous democratic reformers. Blame this on two insensitive and greedy men, Bernie Ecclestone and his sidekick, Jean Todt. There were still angry demonstrations and the police were generously dispensing rubber bullets and stun grenades. One protestor died and one of the country's most prominent human rights activists, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, is close to death in protest of his ongoing unlawful detention, but, hey, Formula One did get its cheque for £25m for coming to Bahrain! Shameful!
