Spam for Maui

Hormel Foods, the company that own Spam donated five truckloads of the product to Hawaii's disaster-stricken Maui (re: "Wildfires Devastate West Maui, Hawaii" published August 18, 2023).

In all, the Spam brand contributed cash and product with a retail value of more than $1,000,000 to directly help those impacted by the wildfires. The company partnered with non-profit group Convoy of Hope to get the cans to where they are needed most. 

I readily admit that I like luncheon meat. But that's not the reason I'm highlighting the above. It is because interestingly, I see it as an example of circumlocution. It's really a quaint way of saying that Hawaiians like spam. 

After all, during World War II, spam is a welcome substitute to meat that was increasingly becoming unaffordable or simply unavailable in conflict-wracked places. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Liverpool shrugged off an early Cherries’ goal and a red card for midfielder Alexis Mac Allister on his Anfield debut to beat Bournemouth 3-1 on Saturday.

Another summer signing Dominik Szoboszlai then went to ground after a challenge at the corner of the box and Mohamed Salah converted the rebound in the thirty-sixth minute after his penalty was parried by the goalkeeper. This means he has finally claimed Steven Gerrard’s record as his own, moving fifth in Liverpool’s all-time scoring charts with No. 187 versus Bournemouth. 

 

Indeed, the new season means more records for the No. 11 to break. 

 

And finally, the outstanding Szoboszlai drove forward to fire an effort on goal that was palmed out but still converted by Jota in the sixty-second minute.
