MAC Puts Spotlight on Bodybuilder

In a world where we face a daily barrage of advertisements, the challenge is to capture our attention long enough to get us to become acquainted with the advertised product or brand. Advertisers are not afraid to seize the spotlight in ways that are offbeat, atypical and avant-garde. By being unconventional, it allows advertisers to engage your audience in a fresh and exciting manner.

So it is really wonderful to see a beauty advertisement that features a body builder. A female body builder, that is. Jelena Abbou, the muscular model in the MAC makeup advertisement, is a Serbian-American fitness model and poses an arresting image in a latex dress. It’s tight at the top like a corset to showcase her flat stomach, with a flared skater skirt at the bottom of the dress. Sensationally stunning.

Jelena represents MAC’s new makeup line ‘Strength.’ Jelena’s body is so different from the usual physical ideal that is shoved down women’s throats – the slim, uniformly “toned” but not muscular, waifish model body that we see in every other ad and magazine and TV show aimed at women. The Huffington Post commented that “the overall effect is pretty striking in a great way”.

This ad represents a different side to feminine beauty. Isn’t it true that at the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder?

Yesterday, I was at the Money & You Toastmasters meeting where I delivered CC speech #4 titled “The Killer”. My evaluator was Christian Leong (HELP University Toastmasters Club) and I was voted Best Speaker. I also took part in Table Topics and was voted Best Table Topics Speaker. I am making steady progress with my speeches and more importantly, I am challenging myself every time I speak. Anyway, this meeting deserves a score of a 7 out of a 10.
