Ants (family Formicidae), any of approximately 10,000 species of insects (order Hymenoptera) that are social in habit and live together in organized colonies. Ants occur worldwide but are especially common in hot climates. They range in size from about 2 to 25 mm (about 0.08 to 1 inch).
And when VFX artist Wren of Corridor Digital came across a research article ("The abundance, biomass, and distribution of ants on Earth", Patrick Schultheiss, Sabine S Nooten, Runxi Wang, et al, September 19, 2022, PNAS, Vol. 119, No. 40), that stated that there are 20 quadrillion ants on Earth, he knew he had to at least attempt to render this incredible amount digitally.
And so, he measured and documented the size of an average ant and created a true-to-scale, giant ball of digital ants – it would have a diameter of 860 meters – that stands as tall as the Burj Khalifa or if all 20 quadrillion ants could be laid out flat it would cover the entire US state of Minnesota!
