US paranoia about China borders on plain ludicrousness and downright silliness.
Internet-connected coffee makers that are manufactured in China are just one of many ways China can gather data, according to American researcher Christopher Balding. Balding had released a report specifically on the Kalerm machines manufactured in Jiangsu, China.
"China is really collecting data on really just anything and everything," Balding told the Washington Times. "As a manufacturing hub of the world, they can put this capability in all kinds of devices that go out all over the world".
And now, a WSJ report published March 05, 2023 is claiming that giant Chinese-made cranes operating at American ports across the country could give Beijing a possible spying tool hiding in plain sight.
Some national-security and Pentagon officials have compared ship-to-shore cranes made by the China-based manufacturer, ZPMC, to a Trojan horse. While comparably well-made and inexpensive, they contain sophisticated sensors that can register and track the provenance and destination of containers, prompting concerns that China could capture information about materiel being shipped in or out of the country to support US military operations around the world.
The cranes could also provide remote access for someone looking to disrupt the flow of goods, said Bill Evanina, a former top US counterintelligence official.
A representative of the Chinese Embassy in Washington called US concerns about the cranes a “paranoia-driven” attempt to obstruct trade and economic cooperation with China. “Playing the ‘China card’ and floating the ‘China threat’ theory is irresponsible and will harm the interests of the US itself”, it said.
Already, in recent years, US national-security officials have pointed to a range of equipment manufactured in China that could facilitate either surveillance or disruptions in the US, including baggage-screening systems and electrical transformers, as well as broader concerns about China’s growing control of ports around the world through strategic investments.
US paranoia is most definitely, escalating. The Americans may not say it outright – but China is now deemed as America’s No.1 enemy. All because the country is threatening US global hegemony.
And just as the US used Ukraine to provoke a war with Russia, it is looking to Taiwan to do the same with China. War is inevitable.
