Reds fans could be heard attempting to drown out the traditional rendition of “God Save the Queen”, ahead of Saturday's FA Cup final with Chelsea.
Liverpool's disdain for the national anthem and the British establishment has been well documented. It was a similar scene ahead of the EFL Cup final, and I read that many people from the city do not associate themselves with the anthem.
It appears that the booing can be traced back to the 1980s. Severe opposition to the Conservative government at the time, as well as the fallout following the Hillsborough tragedy, drove a wedge between the city and the rest of the country.
Those on Merseyside feel the current Government continue to bat-aside their welfare, with foodbanks outside of both Anfield and Goodison a regular feature.
Liverpool supporters have oftentimes displayed their disdain for patriotism with a sign reading ‘Scouse Not English’ regularly seen at the home of Jürgen Klopp’s men.
John Gibbons from Liverpool fan podcast The Anfield Wrap reportedly said he was "surprised" the booing became front page news.
"What I would say to anyone buying these headlines is maybe look into why Liverpool fans act this way, why they feel a disconnect from the country and disconnect from a royal family sat on gold thrones telling people they are going to have tough times ahead. It's something Liverpool fans feel strongly about. It's a city that wants to be vocal about how we think this country should be and how we should live in a fairer society".
Gibbons called on people who criticized the protest to "maybe come up to Liverpool and speak to people and visit the food banks and see how some people in this city are struggling".

One news report I have come across said that average household bills have already rocketed by nearly £700!
The tone-deaf comment came after Tory backbencher Lee Anderson sparked an outrage by saying hungry people going to foodbanks “cannot cook properly" and "cannot budget".
If you must know, the frosty relationship between Liverpool and country also translates to the English national team, with many Liverpudlians not supporting England during major tournaments like the Euros or the World Cup!
