Volodymyr Zelensky's Yakety-yak at Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival opened yesterday with crowded red carpet arrivals, a star-studded ceremony – and to spoil the party, there’s Ukraine President [V]olodymyr [Z]elensky (left) making an appearance to call for the world of cinema to speak out against the Ukraine war. 

“We need a new (Charlie) Chaplin to prove that today cinema is not silent”, said the world’s pet victim, referring to Charlie Chaplin's satire of Adolf Hitler at the outset of World War Two in 1939. 

“We must be victorious. We need cinema to guarantee this ending, that each time it will be on the side of freedom”, said the comedian turned politician through a live video link from Kiev during the opening ceremony. 

Will he ever shut his mouth and spare us his diatribe that is merely, a regurgitation of his tiresome yakety-yak about a country which he won't admit is on the verge of collapse? 

Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at Southampton on Tuesday, trimming Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League to a single point with one match left to play in the 2021-22 season. 

Jürgen Klopp's side knew defeat would hand the title to the Citizens – while even a draw would effectively end the challenge because of their inferior goal difference. 

And it looked as if Liverpool might have a struggle on their hands when the Saints snatched a 13th-minute lead. 

Liverpool, with nine changes from the side that won the FA Cup by beating Chelsea on penalties at Wembley on Saturday, once again showed their resilience and reserves of strength as Takumi Minamino levelled in the twenty-seventh minute with a thumping drive against the club where he spent a spell on loan last season. And then the Reds took a deserved lead after 67 minutes when Joel Matip sent an instinctive looping header over the other side's keeper.

Manchester City will still retain their title with victory over Aston Villa on Sunday – but Liverpool have pushed them all the way again and ensured the fight will go down to the wire.
