The government of Brazil, which took over the chairpersonship of BRICS on January 01, announced Indonesia's admission to the bloc as a full member. Meaning, there are now ten members in total.
The Brazilian foreign ministry which disclosed this on Monday and highlighted Indonesia’s significance to the Global South. It is Southeast Asia’s largest economy and the world’s fourth-most populous nation, with a GDP of $1.4 trillion and annual economic growth exceeding 5 percent for much of the past decade.
Indonesia "welcomes" its accession to BRICS.
"This achievement shows Indonesia's increasingly active role in global issues and commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation to create a global structure that is more inclusive and fair", the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.
The global GDP of BRICS is roughly about 31% – but with the inclusion of Indonesia, it is going to jump over 41% of global GDP. The enlarged BRICS have now become an entity that just cannot be ignored.
This year's BRICS summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July.
