Malaysia is also not out of the woods because we continue to battle a fresh surge of infections. In fact, Malaysia’s coronavirus epidemic curve began rising since April 01, after a decline of about two months from a peak of 146.87 new Covid-19 cases per million people on February 04, based on a rolling seven-day average.
It’s pretty serious because we recorded 37.56 new Covid-19 cases per million people on April 01, which means that daily new infections increased by 75.8 percent in less than three weeks to 66.03 new cases per capita on April 19, based on a rolling seven-day average.
Thankfully, Malaysia’s positive rate (share of tests that are positive), remains low. According to Our World In Data, Malaysia reported a 3.6 percent positive rate on April 18, based on a rolling seven-day average. [Note: WHO have determined that a positive rate of below 5 percent is one indicator that the epidemic is under control in a country].
In Selangor, we are the worst-affected state – with today's tally standing at 768 cases. With the largest population in Malaysia at about 6.57 million people, we have actually been reporting four- or three-digit cases daily this year.
Selangor last reported more than 1,000 new Covid-19 cases on February 20, with 1,001 infections. Following that, daily cases below 1,000 were being continuously reported until today. Hopefully, it doesn’t go back to four digits.
In the meantime, Kuala Lumpur has the fourth highest caseload today, reporting 240 cases.
