I read about this story on fireflies (Scientific name: Pteroptyx tener) in the Selangor Times (February 17-19, 2012, p 06).
AEON Co (M) Berhad are involved in a CSR project to restore the habitat of fireflies in Selangor. Some four hundred volunteers planted six hundred tree saplings – of the sago, macaranga, malabera, ficus and nipah types, all of which are suitable for firefly larvae nesting – as part of the company’s 3-year planting program along the riverbank of Kampung Bukit Belimbing, Kuala Selangor.
This was made possible when the Selangor government acquired agricultural land, formerly owned by the villagers, in 2010 for RM7.5 million. Rehabilitating this terrain will save the fireflies.
This is an excellent example of state government-private sector cooperation that provides a timely boost to safeguard our natural environment.
