A 24-year-old South Calcutta Law College student was allegedly raped by two senior students and an alumnus of the institute two Wednesdays ago. Following her complaint, police arrested the prime accused Manojit 'Mango' Mishra, and his two accomplices, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed. A fourth person, the security guard at the law college was arrested on June 28.
Evidence allegedly suggests the victim lost consciousness during the assault, was revived by the accused, and then raped again. Scratch marks found on Manojit indicate the victim's struggle.
The rape videos found on the accused's cellphone were filmed by his partners in crime. Manojit had asked them to shoot from an angle from which the victim's body and face were clearly visible, Indian police said.
And according to "sources", Manojit had even told police that Pramit and Zaib shot videos of him raping the victim and they were sure that she won't file a police complaint out of the fear that he may circulate the videos.
The investigation also revealed that the prey was in Manojit's crosshairs since the day she joined college. An alumnus and former head of the Trinamool Congress youth wing on campus, Manojit had joined the college as a contractual employee. Called 'Mango' by his cronies, he used his political connections to wield influence on campus.
Pramit and Zaib have told the police that the complainant rebuffed Manojit's advances earlier and he wanted to "teach her a lesson". He offered her the post of the college union's general secretary – a "final bait" – before planning the June 25 assault. Interestingly, this post was offered despite there being no official students' body on campus for years.
According to NDTV, police have found key evidence near the crime scene. The rape was committed in a room used by the college's security guard. Items from the room, such as the bed sheet, are being sent for forensic examination.
Manojit (left) had reportedly shown disturbing behavior and a pattern of sexual aggression for years, according to former classmates and juniors, according to a report by Times of India.
And despite multiple complaints filed against him over molestation, assault, extortion, and harassment, no action was reportedly taken.
