As expected, the Anti-Fake News Bill 2018 was passed by Dewan Rakyat on Monday – with 123 voting in favor and 64 against.
(Five days earlier, the redelineation report was also bulldozed through Dewan Rakyat).
[Note: The law originally proposed a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and fine of RM500,000 for publishing what authorities deem to be fake news – but the government reduced it to six years following a groundswell of criticism].
For those who are still clueless about this piece of legislation, the government had kindly provided eight examples of scenarios that would be considered as “fake news”:

Haha, Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak decried ‘false’ coverage on the anti-fake news law – clarifying that the government would not itself decide what is fake news in any particular case but will let the courts decide.
