Harbin Institute of Technology Offer Engineering PhDs Without Thesis

China has introduced a significant shift in its doctoral education approach. Publishing academic papers or producing lengthy dissertations is no longer the sole route to a PhD. 

Instead, candidates may complete their degree by delivering a functioning product, system or process that demonstrates significant technical contribution. 

Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) recently confirmed the first successful case under this new pathway. In September 2025, a doctoral candidate named Wei Lianfeng completed his PhD based on a vacuum laser welding process and specialised welding equipment that he designed and built. 

According to the South China Morning Post report, he did not submit a conventional academic dissertation. Instead, his doctoral qualification was awarded after external experts reviewed and evaluated the engineering output he produced. 

Under this model, the final assessment does not rely on academic examiners alone. The evaluation panel included industry and technical specialists who assessed whether the developed product met practical, industrial and scientific standards. The purpose is to align doctoral training with China’s national priorities that focus on solving critical technological challenges. 

Chinese institutions adopting this approach aim to accelerate innovation in areas the government consider strategically important. According to the SCMP, the move is linked to China’s objective of reducing dependence on foreign technologies and boosting domestic innovation capacity. Universities involved in this pilot initiative are encouraged to prioritise research outputs that directly address real engineering bottlenecks. 

Supporters argue that this approach can shorten the path from research to real-world application. Critics, however, caution that academic rigour must still be upheld to preserve the quality and credibility of doctoral qualifications. 

China’s introduction of real-world product-based PhD graduation marks a major change in the traditional doctoral landscape. The adoption of this PhD track may influence how future research training is structured within China’s technology and innovation sectors.
