US Annexation of Greenland Will Happen, With NATO's Involvement

US President Donald Trump has told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte (right) that he would like the US-led military bloc to assist Washington in “securing” Greenland following talks at the White House on Thursday. 

Trump initially proposed buying the Danish autonomous territory during his first term in 2019 and has reignited the discussion after returning to office. Speaking at a recent joint session of Congress, he stated that the US will secure the island “one way or the other”. 

Asked by journalists on the same day about his “vision on the potential annexation of Greenland”, Trump stated, “I think it will happen”. 

The NATO chief downplayed the proposal; instead, he went on to say that Trump is “totally right” in highlighting security concerns in the High North and the Arctic, given the increased presence of Russia and China in the region. He highlighted the importance of Western nations working “together on this under the US leadership”. 

Trump noted that the US already has “a couple of bases” and hundreds of soldiers in Greenland, suggesting that “maybe you’ll see more and more soldiers go there”.

[As far as I am aware, there's only the Pituffik Space Base, formerly Thule Air Base. A United States Space Force base, hosting about 200 troops, and located on the northwest coast of Greenland under a defense agreement between Denmark and the US]. 

And he reiterated that the US “really needs” Greenland for both national and international security. “I think that’s why NATO might have to get involved in a way”.

Yesterday, Pearly Tan put up a brave fight on her 25th birthday, but she and Thinaah Muralitharan fell short in the quarter-finals of the All England against their familiar Japanese rivals, Chiharu Shida-Nami Matsuyama. The world No. 5 were beaten 21-17, 21-19 in a 41-minute battle in Birmingham.

With this defeat, Pearly-Thinaah exit at the quarter-final stage for the fourth time in five appearances at the prestigious badminton tournament.

Also, yesterday, at the Squash Australian Open, Sivasangari Subramaniam lost 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6 11-5 to world No. 9 Rowan Elaraby of Egypt in the Australian Open quarter-finals in Brisbane. 

On March 07, she had lost 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 to Rowan in the New Zealand Open quarter-finals in Christchurch.
