Anger Over Claim UK is an Islamist Country

Donald Trump's choice for vice-president provoked anger when the latter described the UK under Labour as an "Islamist country" with nuclear weapons last week.

UK politicians from across the spectrum have condemned Vance's comments, with former Tory co-chair and the first Muslim to serve in a British cabinet Sayeeda Warsi suggesting the special relationship between the UK and the US has "become no more than a racist joke". Writing for The Independent, she added, "It bodes for really dangerous times ahead".

Labour MP Rosie Duffield said Vance had made "obviously a pretty ignorant and racist comment", while Green party co-leader Carla Denyer said: "We need to call that out for what it is, it's Islamophobic".

Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner told ITV's "Good morning Britain": "I think he said quite a lot of fruity things in the past as well". 

In a speech for the National Conservatism Conference (July 08-10) in Washington DC, Vance recounted a conversation with a friend.

"I was talking about, you know: what is the first truly Islamist that will get a nuclear weapon?" he said. "Maybe it is Iran, maybe Pakistan already kind of counts and then we finally decided that it's actually the UK - since Labour just took over".

This innovative "transformer" truck is popular in rural areas in China with bookings already lined up until September, the owner said.
