Plainly speaking, this has been a coup.
And almost immediately, the White House issued a statement, in which they insist that Biden will finish his current term in office despite stepping down as the candidate.
Harris taking over is not a done deal, however.
There are supposedly others who have been touted as potential replacements in the weeks leading to Biden's withdrawal.
On cue, many paid tribute to him after his pronouncement – but crucially almost none have said explicitly that they support the Harris endorsement.
All eyes are now on Chicago in Illinois where delegates will vote next month at the Democratic National Convention (August 19-22) to officially confirm who will replace Biden.
