It does look like Malaysia is seeing the return of Barisan Nasional to power. Not only did the coalition won handsomely in the state, they also managed to maintain momentum from their other dominant state election wins in Melaka and Sarawak.
After capturing a two-thirds majority in three straight elections, the bloc will likely be confident they will bounce back strongly from the shock loss they suffered in 2018.
Pakatan Harapan, which had 27 seats in the old state assembly, were rudely cut down by half and Perikatan Nasional clutched onto just three seats after having won 12 in 2018. Youth party Muda secured one seat while the rest didn't make the cut.
The final tally: BN 40, PH 12, PN 3 and Muda 1.
The Johor result will only make the UMNO call for an early general election grow louder and harder to ignore.
