Court of Appeal Affirms Najib Razak's Conviction and Sentence

Today, Malaysia’s three-member Court of Appeal bench chaired by Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil affirmed the conviction and sentence imposed on Najib Razak by the High Court for his role in the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to SRC International. 

But the same court granted the former prime minister a stay of execution of the sentence – a 12-year jail term and a RM210 million fine. This means that Najib will not have to serve his sentence in jail or pay his fine until his final appeal is disposed of in the Federal Court. 

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal dismissed his application to adduce new evidence to his case. 

Not only that but Najib’s lead lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had sought for a postponement of his conviction appeal verdict – their usual tactic to buy time and prolong his court proceedings – but it was unsuccessful this time around.

Liverpool became the first English side to win all six Champions League group games as they completed a perfect journey into the knockout stage with a 2-1 victory over AC Milan in Italy yesterday. 

The Serie A leaders scored first – in the twenty-eighth minute – but Mohamed Salah levelled the score with a close-range finish for his 20th goal of the season eight minutes later. And Divock Origi struck the winner in the fifty-fifth minute – his first goal in the competition since the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham.
