Facebook faces a lot of flak after it blocked news content in Australia amid a dispute with the government over a planned law that compels “tech” companies to pay for news content on their platforms.
Under Facebook's new rules, Australian users are prevented from viewing and sharing local and international news, while local publishers are restricted from sharing or posting any links on their pages.
Since the ban came into effect, it is said that visitors to Australian news sites dropped both at home and abroad, with overseas traffic down by over 20 percent per day, according to data analytics company Chartbeat.
Interestingly, the data also suggested users were not yet leaving Facebook in response to the ban.
Facebook is an online social media and social networking service and a flagship service of the namesake company Facebook, Inc. And for some bizarre reason, the California, US-based company consider themselves a tech company – but who are they kidding?
Just because Facebook utilize technology – that doesn't make them a tech company any more than any other company that uses technology in their businesses.
Anyway, Facebook is a bully – and it raises concerns over access to information. The Australian government vowed today to press ahead with the content law.
