Yesterday, the world tallied 10.5 million coronavirus cases.
By now, we all know that countries are not waiting to be coronavirus-free before they open up their economies. They can’t afford to.
And so, slowly but steadily, they are learning to live with the pandemic. They have no choice really.
Even the two countries, Tanzania and New Zealand that boldly declared they have triumphed over Covid-19 – I had blogged about these two countries on June 10 – have hushed up.
Tanzania is a riddle! It appears that the country has ceased to report Covid-19 numbers. It’s as if time has stood still.
New Zealand, meanwhile recorded 24 new cases – fortunately, no known community transmission.
And the US, always wanting to be the World’s No. 1, held firmly onto its favorite ranking as it surged ahead with 2.7 million cases (and fatalities topping 130,000) on Tuesday.
The situation will surely get worse – but at least, the country gets to be No. 1!
The Americans are really panicking right now! I just read news that they have bought up virtually all the stocks of remdesivir, one of two drugs that are claimed to work against Covid-19, for the next three months leaving almost none for the rest of the world.
The Trump administration ordered more than 500,000 doses – all of what the drug’s producer Gilead will make in July and 90% of what they expect to produce in August and September.
It’s a dog-eat-dog world, after all – and the US is a pit bull!
