The Pekingese Story

Once upon a time, a Chinese family had an altercation with an English family and a Portuguese family and through sheer force, the English and the Portuguese managed to get the Chinese family to admit defeat and submit to them.

The Chinese were humiliated and worse, they had to give up their family's prized possessions, two pure bred Pekingese. So, the English took one Pekingese and the Portuguese took the other.

The English family took the dog back and fed it English food and taught the dog the ways of the English, its culture and lifestyle – so much so the Pekingese did start to believe that it was an English bulldog! Conveniently, the English never bothered to tell the Pekingese to be loyal to its true identity and roots.

As the years went by, the Chinese family became very powerful and negotiated with the English and Portuguese to give back their pets.

They were so happy to have their long lost pet Pekingese back. The Chinese had big plans to train the two Pekingese to become champion breeds, the Chinese way – alas, it was not to be.

The Pekingese taken by the English was apprehensive, even suspicious of the Chinese and refused to eat Chinese food. The Pekingese, already convinced itself that it was an English bulldog wanted everything that was English. The delusional dog felt it was too good to eat lowly Chinese food.

The Chinese family tried every means to help the English-minded Pekingese to adapt. They let the Pekingese have its own way and it only made things worse. The Pekingese stubbornly clung to the belief it was an English bulldog. It even demanded that the former master take it back.

“But you're a Pekingese!”

“I'm a born and bred British bulldog!! I eat fish and chips, and drink Earl grey!” the Pekingese retorted.

“My pu-erh is nice as well!” the Chinese family told the Pekingese. They even tried to compromise. “You can have both Earl grey and pu-erh together!”

Despite their pleas, the Pekingese would hear nothing of it. It wanted its previously posh British life back.

“Your former master is broke and they are also having troubles within his own family! They can barely take care of themselves!” the Chinese family said.

“I'm sure my Queen Mother can take care of me!” The adamant Pekingese refused to budge. “I'm an English bulldog! I'm an English bulldog! I'm an English bulldog!”

The Chinese were patient and they were tolerant. They tried everything – but it would seem that the situation became hopeless. The Pekingese had turned its back on their entreaties. In fact, it got so angry that it started biting its own tail and ripping at its fur.

And when the Chinese family tried to tell the dog that Pekingese are different from bulldogs, it got even angrier. The Pekingese started slamming its own nose against any hard surface and trying to make its snout look like a bulldog's – only to bloody itself.

It would seem there was nothing they could do to make peace with the wrathful Pekingese – every time they tried to reason with the dog – all the rabid Pekingese did was to rant, rave and rage.

The Chinese shook their heads as they looked at the crazed Pekingese smashing itself against anything and everything, snapping, snarling and screaming “I'm an English bulldog! I'm an English bulldog! I'm an English bulldog!”

In the end, the Chinese family decided to let it be and instead, turned their attention to the other Pekingese dog.
