On June 05, 2015, an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck Sabah. The US Geological Survey said the quake happened at about 7:15 AM (00:15 BST), at a depth of 10km (32,800ft). The epicentre was just 54km (33 miles) from Malaysia’s highest peak.
The rare earthquake triggered landslides that rained rocks and boulders down the trekking routes on 4,095-meter-high (13,435-feet-high) Mount Kinabalu, trapping scores of climbers and guides.
The quake also damaged roads and buildings, including schools and a hospital on Sabah’s west coast. It also broke one of the twin rock formations on the mountain known as the “Donkey’s Ears.”
The final count was that eighteen people had perished on Mount Kinabalu. They were six Malaysians, nine Singaporeans, one Filipino, one Japanese, and one Chinese national.
And 137 other climbers – another report put the number at 167 – who were also on the mountain that fateful day, were successfully rescued.

Singapore declared a day of national remembrance on Monday and Sabah too flew flags at half-staff to mourn the victims. The rest of Malaysia seemed indifferent.
On Thursday evening, I delivered a CC#9 speech in Menara ExxonMobil in KL’s Jalan Kia Peng – this was the Tiger Toastmasters Club’s maiden meeting outside of lunchtime hours. A well-attended meeting that attracted Toastmasters from ITC Bintang and even Monash. I would give this meeting a 7 over 10 score.
