Since a couple of weeks ago, we have been receiving stacks of The Star newspaper – FOC! The first thought that came to mind was that the boycott must be really biting into newspaper sales. I say thumbs-up to Malaysians who heeded the call to spurn this MCA-owned newspaper. In fact, I have personally heard of colleagues who have stopped buying and reading it. And yes, we MUST continue with this boycott!
Anyway, this morning, I saw the front page of The Star and it resembles a “Wanted” poster – identifying the killer of Arab Malaysian Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadim – he was shot dead in broad daylight and at close range in KL’s Lorong Ceylon on July 29. His wife was also injured. I am certain there has been an all-points bulletin out on the shooter.

The other high-profile shooting was that of MyWatch chairperson R Sri Sanjeevan on July 27 – a pillion rider on a motorcycle had drawn alongside his car and shot him in Bahau, Negeri Sembilan. He is still in hospital and today’s news report says he is showing signs of recovery.

Yesterday, N Jeevandran was gunned down at Taman Seri Semarak in Parit Buntar, Perak.
On July 28, in Kampung Simee in Ipoh, a gunman had fired at least four shots, killing Jasrafveendeerjeet Singh and injuring his friends Sarbjit Singh and Koo Loo Kong.
On July 23, G Santhana Samy was wounded when two men on a motorcycle shot at him in Butterworth, Penang.
On July 20, G Surintheran was shot and later slashed to death in Paya Terubong, a neighborhood in Air Itam, Penang, while his friend Logayndran was injured.

On July 18, secondary schoolteacher, K Shanmugam was killed when he was shot nine times while he was in his car at Simpang Empat Keladi in Butterworth.
On July 14, nineteen-old M Ravindran was killed and two others, S Leenesh and A Sukumar were injured when six shots were fired at them in Bagan Dalam, also in Butterworth.

And on July 11, car repossessor E Beritto cheated death after a gunman wearing a full-faced helmet shot him in Bukit Jambul. The ten-bullet salvo missed him but his son, four-year-old B Shawn Yashwin, was injured, believed to be hit by a ricocheting bullet.
In a July 31, 2013 editorial, The Star had suggested that the country is slipping into a state of lawlessness! It had written: “Another day, another shooting. It seems as if we are becoming as dangerous as some South American nations where gun violence seems to be the norm”.
Coming from a pro-government newspaper, this describes an alarming trend prevailing in this country. Not only do we have to contend with sky-high crime but worse, we are now confronted with the prospect of violent crime! What is this country coming to?

On a lighter note, I want to help promote this upcoming event at Sunway University: Genesis. A Sunway Dance Club (SDC) production. Other than the Sunway University Toastmasters Club, this club is also very active on campus and it deserves our unstinting support. Check out this video:
