JAIS, JAKIM and other Muslim organizations in Malaysia have repeatedly warned local Muslims against celebrating Valentine’s Day today. “In reality as well as historically, the celebration of Valentine’s Day is synonymous with vice activities” – according to the wisdom of Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz, head of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM), which oversees the country's Islamic policies. And so there is this genuine fear among well-intentioned authorities that there will be a mammoth orgy of sex and drinking and partying today! By tomorrow, KL and other cities will come to a complete standstill because their citizens will be in a drunken stupor. And in nine months, births out of wedlock will become a frightening curse, a detestable shame, a heart-rending calamity. Baby-dumping becomes rampant – there will be abandoned babies on doorsteps, left in cardboard boxes, ditched in trash cans, cast away in dumpsters and basically, left in the cold – those lucky infants will be found and taken care of and those who are unlucky will not survive. All because of this one day in which the country will descend into a crazy frenzy of sinful madness. At least, that’s what we are led to believe will happen on Valentine’s Day in Malaysia.
Non-Malaysians and non-Muslims don’t understand at all. They have a duty to protect the Muslim faithful. To use “love” to seduce Muslims from being a pious, religious and devout society, is very irresponsible. The country already has had enough problems on her hands – we don’t need to be grieving over other problems. So please don’t mock at them for they know what they do. They are absolutely right in not allowing Valentine’s Day to be celebrated because in this one day when we lose our moral compass, all hell breaks lose and the country is torn asunder.
But for those still insisting to celebrate this Day, let me wish you Happy Valentine’s Day! After painting for you an appalling tableau of dreadful tragedy, here’s some interesting trivia to cast away this pall of doom and get you into the Valentine’s Day mood:
