I spotted this Monash University Sunway Campus ad in Sunday Star (January 09, 2011, p N14) and it carried this claim (“Our graduates are equipped to live, learn, work & contribute globally”) by Prof Mahendhiran Nair, Head of School – which is fine even if it is clichéd. And then there was this “formula”: Prestigious School + Premier Program = Rewarding Career. Again this is fine, but it makes me wonder. Every Business School will promote itself as a prestigious school, and even talk about its premier program. So how does anybody differentiate with everybody else? Of course, if we read the small print, the ad also says that “our programs are accredited by Malaysian and Australian agencies and recognized worldwide”. Again, isn’t this a common thread linking all Australian programs offered in Malaysia? Victoria at Sunway. UniSA at Taylor’s. Wollongong at Inti. Edith Cowan at HELP. Curtin Malaysia. Swinburne Malaysia.
I daresay that we should identify a competitive advantage that allows us to really stand out. I like to venture that at Sunway University, we should add a third component and that is, “people”. Mind you, not just any qualified academics but those who also have the additional corporate/industry experience. After all, when you study Business, it is more about applying business theories to real-world business situations.
Some marketing books refer this as the 5th P – suggesting not just the level of service (in our case, it’s about being student-focused) but that in an educational institution, the expertise and skills of the people who work for the organization can be used to set you apart from your competitors. Here, I would refer to not only academic qualifications which anybody can strive to attain, but more importantly, the work experiences that they bring to a Business School can be telling. In this respect, no one is identical to the next person because we are a diverse school of people coming from different organizations and different industries.
