With only a top-five finish in the Premier League left to play, the pressure was on Liverpool's Arne Slot and his players to deliver when they made a first-ever visit to Hill Dickinson Stadium for the 248th Merseyside derby yesterday.
And the Reds delivered. They scored a timely 2-1 win over Everton.
The Toffees gave away the ball cheaply to Cody Gakpo, who played a terrific pass for Mohamed Salah to tuck it home in the 29th minute.
But they made amends and equalized in the fifty-fourth minute. And it looked as though both teams were going to share points.
Virgil van Dijk had other ideas as he scored a dramatic 100th minute winner for the Reds from a Dominic Szoboszlai corner.
The victory boosts Liverpool’s Champions League qualification hopes as they now sit seven points clear of closest challengers Chelsea.
Up north, Celtic too, triumphed 6-2 against St Mirren.
Daizen Maeda capitalised on the Buddies goalie's mistake to force Celtic's opening goal in the very first minute. And Anthony Ralston thundered an effort in off the bar with the last kick of the first half after stepping onto Yang Hyun-jun's clever backheel.
St Mirren equalized in the 53rd and 91st minutes to force the game into extra time.
In that additional period, quick goals came from Kelechi Iheanacho's near post header via a James Forrest cross and the boot of Luke McCowan broke the Buddies' spirit before Iheanacho slammed in a fifth with a stunning left-foot finish from inside the area. Extra gloss was added when Sweden international Benjamin Nygren stroked in his 20th goal of an impressive debut season. All in a ruthles seven-minute spell.
Martin O'Neill's men have now booked their spot in the Scottish Cup final – their 62nd final – on May 23 against Championship side, Dunfermline Athletic.
