At 12.50 AM on Thursday, Putrajaya rolled back its reform agenda and reintroduced preventive detention through amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) which was passed by parliament.
The amendments do not just include detention without trial but also restrictions on judicial reviews, secrecy provisions and recital of Article 149 in the preamble, which the opposition rightly claims is inconsistent with basic human rights guaranteed in the Federal Constitution.
The opposition has, in the run-up to the passage of the bill, repeatedly said the changes were similar to the repealed Internal Security Act (ISA).

BN used its superior numbers to pass the contentious proposed amendments to the PCA.
And with that, we have just taken a huge step backwards on rights by returning to administrative detention practices!
FYI, the revised PCA allows for detention without trial for up to 2 years and furthermore, it can be extended after the two years have passed.
On Saturday morning, I was at Level 10 in the PwC offices in KL Sentral to participate in the Division P Humorous Speech & Speech Evaluation Contests. As in previous years, I just wasn’t good enough to win! I came in first runner-up in the Humorous Speech Contest and second runner-up in the Speech Evaluation Contest.
But at Taylor's University in the afternoon, there was a ray of sunshine at the Division B Humorous Speech & Speech Evaluation Contests where Sunway University Toastmaster, Mirosha Somasundram who participated in the former, triumphed over 5 other contestants. She will proceed to the District-level Contest at the Semi-Annual Convention in Ipoh on November 08-09, 2013.
