70 Years of Godzilla: A New Roar in South-east Asia

Godzilla made a dramatic entrance near Malaysia’s iconic Petronas Twin Towers as part of a special video marking the 70th anniversary of the franchise. 

Japanese entertainment company Toho released the 55-second video tribute titled "70 Years of Godzilla: A New Roar in South-east Asia" for fans on Saturday. 

The video shows the monster towering over Kuala Lumpur’s skyline (0:35), with other scenes featuring landmarks such as Singapore’s Marina Bay and Bali’s paddy fields.

“For the first time across South-east Asia, the legend emerges in a powerful tribute to the fans who have kept its legacy alive”, Toho had shared in the video’s description. 

The company added, “This special footage honours South-east Asia, celebrating seven decades of Godzilla’s unstoppable journey through the region’s iconic landmarks”. 

Note: Godzilla was first created and appeared in the 1954 Japanese film, simply titled "Godzilla" (ゴジラ, Gojira). This film, directed by Ishirō Honda and produced by Toho Studios, marked the character's debut. 

The name "Godzilla" is a combination of the Japanese words "gorira" (gorilla) and "kujira" (whale). 

Spanning over 70 years and spread across more than 32 films, the monster known as Godzilla is a worldwide icon. Based on a monster awakened from the devastating aftermath of a nuclear attack, the franchise birthed a genre that holds supremacy in pop culture today.

Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam advanced to the third round of the 2024-25 PSA Squash World Championships in Chicago, USA. On Sunday, the seventh seed defeated Egypt’s world No. 17 Sana Ibrahim 11-4, 11-6, 5-11, 11-5 in a second-round match. 

A day earlier, in the opening round, she took 39 minutes to overcome Spain's world No. 52 Marta Dominguez 11-4, 11-5, 16-18, 11-2. 

Sivasangari will next meet home player Amanda Sobhy, who cruised past Egypt’s Kenzy Ayman 11-4, 11-3, 11-4 in another second-round match.
