And two locations hailed as virus success stories – sites that have seen virtually zero or single-digit Covid cases since the start of the year – are showing alarming signs of the virus making a determined comeback.
This month, Singapore and China Taiwan have both seen a sudden and aggressive rise in cases – with the former logging 248 new cases just last week, and the latter 1,200 local infections. Both places have gone into a heightened state of restrictions, limiting the size of social gatherings and closing schools.
By global standards, these numbers may seem small – but for these sites, these figures would have been unthinkable just a month ago.

Liverpool's incredible triumph against West Brom on Sunday kept their Champions League hopes alive and yesterday, they built on their last-gasp weekend heroics with a victory that was much tighter than the scoreline suggests.
A cool finish from Roberto Firmino in the forty-third minute turned the game our way. Then a first club goal for Nathaniel Phillips in the fifty-second minute and this was followed thirty-six minutes later by an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain goal that made the points safe and improved our goal difference.
The Reds are now in the fourth Premier League spot, level on points with fifth-placed Leicester City and with a goal difference four better than the Foxes.
Klopp's side host the Eagles in Roy Hodgson's last game in charge in four days' time, with 10,000 fans inside Anfield. One more game to win, Reds, just one more!
