Information Communication and Culture Minister, Rais Yatim warned that the government will take stern action against those who use blogs and social media networks to instigate the people to revolt against the government (New Sunday Times, March 06, 2011, p 25).
He is the latest who have joined the chorus of government ministers (Najib, Muhyiddin, Hishammuddin, etc) who have repeatedly cautioned Malaysians against replicating the Tunisian-Egyptian-Libyan-Bahraini-Yemeni unrest here. I suppose they fear that the contagion of the Arab world might catch on in this country. These leaders are genuinely afraid that people power will rise here, so to protect their rice bowl, they admonish and threaten in the belief that people will chicken out. They are more nervous than I thought. But it is unlikely anything will happen anytime soon. Malaysians generally are too comfortable to want to start protesting and demonstrating and fighting. Chill lah, fellas!
Malays still need help, says Dr M, according to this headline in The Malaysian Insider on March 05, 2011. He was stressing the point that the Malays need government assistance because the New Economic Policy did not achieve its goal. I will have to agree with him on this score because the NEP was hijacked by politicians who gave priority to their own self-interests. After all, most of the government largesse benefited these politicians and their business cronies (whether in UMNO, MCA, MIC, Gerakan and/or their Sarawak/Sabah allies) while the ordinary folks (Malays and non-Malays) were brushed aside.
Then again, the Malays should get rid of this "dependency syndrome" – methinks, the UMNO government did concoct a clever agenda. Keep them on crutches so that they don’t learn how to walk again! Then they have to be dependent on the government for everything – that’s how you keep them on a tight leash.
And anyway, why single out the Malays? Sure, they need help. So too, the others. Isn’t it time for Malaysians to insist on change? Through the ballot box lah!.
