It was a nerve-wrecking game between Liverpool and Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday!
In the end, we sealed a 5-4 penalty-shootout victory after a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes – and won our very first silverware of the 2019-2020 season!
This success is special because the Reds won it in Istanbul, Turkey, the scene of their 2005 Champions League victory, and the high drama of the penalty shoot-out.
The Blues actually struck first through Olivier Giroud in the thirty-sixth minute but Sadio Mane scored twice to give Liverpool the lead in the 48th and 95th -minute. Jorginho's spot-kick in the 101st-minute, however, took the game to penalties – where Liverpool triumphed.
Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Divock Origi, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all scored for Liverpool. And for the other side, Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Mason Mount and Emerson did the same – but Tammy Abraham’s effort came back off Adrian San Miguel’s outstretched boot and the goalie became a Kop shootout hero.
And the game was made extra special because France’s Stephanie Frappart became the first female to referee a major UEFA men’s game.
On Wednesday evening, I was in USJ9 in Subang Jaya, Selangor, to attend the Subang Toastmasters meeting.
And I presented a speech from the Specialty Speeches manual – project #3 Sell a Product titled C and which won me a Best Speaker ribbon:
