St Patrick's Day 2014

Happy St Patrick’s Day, everybody!

The Red Devils had a really miserable game at Old Trafford yesterday when they slumped to an inglorious 3-0 defeat at the hands (ahem, legs!) of the Reds – and this win gave the latter’s title credentials a big lift. At least, I now possess a wee bit of optimism.

The first goal came when Rafael – who had just been booked for a wild challenge on Steven Gerrard – clearly handled in the area. It was a straightforward decision for the match referee and Gerrard scored the spot-kick in the thirty-fourth minute. Liverpool were awarded a second goal after Phil Jones bundled Joe Allen to the ground. Once more Gerrard stepped forward and once more he demonstrated his expertise from the spot in the forty-sixth minute. Liverpool found the third when Luis Suarez ghosted in behind the hosts' flatfooted defence (84) to roll home and make United's misery complete.

An embarrassing Manchester United performance! This was the defending champions' fifth home defeat of the campaign and it is fair to say that their hopes of a top-four finish have been all but extinguished.
