China Completes One Billion Jabs

One billion jabs! That’s the number of doses administered in China in its Covid-10 vaccination drive on Sunday – more than a third of the doses given worldwide – a scale and speed unrivalled by any other country.

Shao Yiming, chief expert at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention had intimated on May 18 that his country is likely to realize herd immunity by the end of 2021. That is likely to mean 2.2 billion doses.

In Malaysia, we love to talk big. The Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force had trumpeted their ambition – to aim for herd immunity by the first quarter of 2021!

Of course, we all know that it was nothing more than just hot air and it was a BIG FAIL! Now, they promise they’ll achieve it by December 2021, LOL!

Despite efforts to ramp up vaccinations in the country, only over 13.5 million people have signed up for the national immunization program, still less than half of the country’s 33 million population.

One cannot deny the relatively low rate of vaccination sign-up and inadequate vaccine supply could hinder progress – and fuel doubt that the government could meet their target even by 1Q22. Besides, I don't trust my government, so what they say don't mean a thing to me.

Anyway, my sentiment aside, we'll just have to wait and see.

We also have workplace clusters to contend with. They remain a primary contributor to Malaysia’s Covid caseload.

In fact, it was reported that a total of 150 construction sites nationwide had to close since June 01 for failing to comply with the SOPs. [Note: Eleven of the offending construction sites have been allowed to operate again after they got their act together].

I’m tired of saying this but a 'full' lockdown is required if we are serious about bringing down infection numbers. But in this country, the government have repeatedly shown they are good at talking but actions do not match their words. I don' think they even understand what a 'full' lockdown means.

Anyway, it's too late for that because the country is almost in economic ruin, thanks to three MCOs.
