A 58-Year Jail Sentence

The former first lady of Honduras Rosa Elena Bonilla, was sentenced on Wednesday to 58 years in jail on charges of fraud and undue appropriation of funds, a Supreme Court spokesperson had announced.

The fifty-two-year-old wife of ex-president Porfirio Lobo has been in custody since February 2018.

In any case, her defense attorney still insisted Bonilla was innocent and indicated an appeal will be filed with the nation’s highest court. This would be her last chance to avoid serving out the sentence.

Bonilla was accused of misusing the equivalent of $779,000 in funds between 2010 and 2014 that came from international donations and public funds, and which were meant to be used for social programs, according to an investigation carried out by attorney general’s office and a unit of the Organization of American States.

She had used the money to pay for medical bills, jewelry, tuition for her children and construction work, according to the A-G’s office.

The court also sentenced her close associate, Saul Escobar, to a 48-year jail sentence for embezzlement of public funds and fraud.

There’s a consolation though for the duo. If they are unsuccessful to overturn or reduce their jail sentences – they need only to serve 30 years, which is the maximum allowed by Honduran law.

Anyway, it is not only the wife  her hubby is not exactly innocent as well.

Lobo (right), who governed Honduras between 2010 and 2014, has also been linked to the Los Cachiros criminal organization in trials in the United States – although he has rejected these accusations.

In fact, in 2017, one of Lobo’s sons, Fabio (left) had pleaded guilty before a US court to conspiring to import cocaine into the United States – and on September 06, he was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

He was arrested in Haiti in May 2015 in a US Drug Enforcement Administration sting and was brought to the US.

As I type out this post, I am wondering out loud how many years will Rosmah Mansor (right) get for her crimes? With 20 charges lined up against her todate – I cannot help but ask myself again and again.

To be honest, I can’t wait for her trial to start!
