Yellow Balloons

On August 31, 2015, dance coach Bilqis Hijjas (left) released yellow balloons from the fifth floor of the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Bukit Bintang, KL.

The balloons had words "democracy", "free media" and "justice" written on them.

At that moment, Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor were attending the DiverseCity 2015 Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival on the ground floor of the said mall.

And so, Bilqis was charged on September 23, 2015 under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for behaving in an insulting manner with the purpose of stirring anger, which would likely cause a disturbance.

BTW, the charge did not even specify who was allegedly insulted  although we can safely assume it was the obnoxious couple that "terasa" and felt offended.

Still, Bilqis was acquitted twice by the Magistrate’s Court – on July 01, 2016 and on November 27, 2017 – but the prosecution persisted in appealing against both decisions.

And yesterday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Hafizah Rajuni informed High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali of the decision to drop the appeal.

It took a change of government before Bilqis is finally freed of the balloons charge! Only in Malaysia!

This is so true – I feel this way many times. I’m very human, after all!
